WCFO-AM 1160 sold to religious organization

1050 is now 1040. They moved. Remember? They are out there on I-20 East. That makes it easier to listen to WKNG 1060 out of Birmingham, if you like to listen to AM country.
I remember hearing about those Crosley super-power transmitters. They were water cooled and took up the space of an indoor basketball court.
Radios were not as sensitive back then and many TRF sets were still in use.
Now, as I recall, the x-band stations, like 1690, were to run AM stereo when those licenses were granted.
Did 1160 ever get a new audio processor? They've had audio issues for the past couple of years. I bet they've got a lot of old equipment there.

Correct. WPBS is 1040 now. WKNG is out of Tallapoosa, not Birmingham. They are a 50kW daytimer as well (5kW critical hours).

So it appears Weber is taking an almost $10M haircut on the sale of WCFO. He purchased the station for $10.4M and is selling for $750K.
I'm guessing Weber needed to take this loss for tax purposes. Besides...values seem to keep going in one direction for radio stations in general...down. Who would have ever guessed $18M would buy you a full market FM signal in Chicago!

So is it true that Weber is paying $50K of the $750K in cake frosting?

If you remember, Weber is no longer the Frosting Czar of Atlanta radio. The frosting outfit was the company he inherited when his father died, which he then sold to go into the lucrative radio business.
If you think about it for a minute...for the 25 million Weber has spent on two daytime AMers he could have owned "The Loop" in Chicago. Plus had a couple million to get things rolling.
"The Loop" with bird call IDs...
I wonder how much frosting you would get for $50K...

OK, here's my amended list of 50,000 watt AM radio stations in the Atlanta area, including corrections mentioned above. The list is still nine stations, deleting WATB/WWSZ Decatur, while adding WKNG Tallapoosa.

640 WGST 50kw D/1kw N
680 WCNN 50kw D/10kw N
750 WSB 50kw D&N
1010 WTZA 50kw D/78 watts N (4500 watts CH)
1040 WPBS 50kw Days only (5500 watts CH)
1060 WKNG 50kw Days only (5000 watts CH)
1080 WFTD 50kw Days only (30kw CH)
1160 WCFO 50kw D/160 watts N
1550 WAZX 50kw D/16 watts N

As David mentioned, WLW Cincinnati was powered at 500,000 watts starting in 1934. It was interfering with a Toronto station, more than 400 miles from Cincinnati, so it installed a directional antenna. Over time other stations in or near Cincinnati petitioned Congress to end the experiment, due to WLW's advertising advantage and interference to other stations, so FCC permission was withdrawn in 1939. WGY Schenectady at times experimented with 100,000 and 200,000 watt broadcasts but they never became permanent.

So in the U.S. and Canada, 50,000 watts is the max for AM stations (other than Radio Martí). Mexico has a handful of AM stations powered up to 150,000 watts, plus 900 XEW Mexico City, at 250,000 watts. And Cuba probably has a few stations running more than 50,000 watts, but we don't know their maximum power.
