WCGO SHUTTING DOWN THIS WEEK.

I heard a commercial today on 1600AM WCGO that this would be their last week on the air. The commercial said that
1600 AM would no longer exist. I'm in my 30's and I enjoyed this station, I'm sad to see it go.

When will 1590 in Evanston expand their signal?

I am very sorry to see WCGO leave the air-- especially since the main reason is to allow the garbled-sounding pay toilet station next door to expand its reach even farther. I would never be sorry to see that station go off the air!

WCGO is a great little station; I always gave them a listen when I was down that way. There is no other radio station that reaches the city with that format. I can't believe that in a city the size of Chicago there's not a single station programming decent music. All we get is blah, blah, blah and 100 kinds of rock. Yuck.

I read on another board they may move the WCGO calls to WONX. I just realized what the WCGO calls mean.

It would be nice if someone in the south would LMA 1270 from Relevant and get the WCGO format off the bird. Does Relevant really need 1270 with 950? Or perhaps 1230 might flip? I don't know if CGO was able to sell advertising, but they were very regular in the ratings.

With 1580 in Aurora silent, 1600 in Harvard Silent and the soon to be silent 1600 in Chicago Heights, WONX has the CP to go 7kW Daytime Non-Directional (nighttime directional facilities remain the same), they are probably ready to throw the switch as soon as WONX knows that WCGO has turned in their license to the FCC.

I doubt Relevant Radio needs 1270 WWCA now that they have 950 WNTD. Both 950 & 1270 have city grade coverage over Gary for both, Day & Night. 1270 is primarily heard in Lake County Indiana, with some overage just over the state & county lines of either side of Lake County. If Relevant Radio were willing to sell 1270, & Kovas wanted to buy (or LMA), they could operate a new format, or put the format from WCGO on 1270.

It's anyone's guess what the future might hold for 1270. They've only been on the air since December 1, 2003 or 2004, after being silent for 9 years.

Corporate radio at their best.

Are WWCA 1270 AM and WAUR 930 AM still for sale? I agree that AM 1270 is not really needed for Relevant Radio
anymore, day or night. WNTD 950 AM's signal covers the entire 1270 listening area, and their nightime array of
six towers is close to the IL/IN. border in Burnham, Il.

I do hope that someone picks up the format that Kovas is dropping for the expansion of the WONX "original programming"
The ideal candidate's in my opinion would be WCFJ AM 1470, since they are mainly running a variety of music anyway.
Another signal that would be great would be AM1080 WNWI which has a strong signal in southern Chicago/NW Indiana,
from their towers in Riverdale. I don't see this happening though, my first thought was WCFJ(which roughly covers the
same are as WCGO). Good call on AM 1270 though, I hadn't thought of them. I also like the idea of WJOB picking up
the format. They have local talk during AM and PM drive, and syndicated talk the rest of the day. I think Dave Ramsey
is OK, but the rest of the lineup is pretty bad. They could keep their local shows and flip it on the Timeless bird the rest
of the day. With that being said I don't see that happening either. It is a shame WJOB used to be a very good community
station with a great mix of local talk and music. Nowadays you have to have the car radio cranked up to about 27 :D to
here them in sight of their tower due to their terrible audio processing. Being on a graveyard frequency it's even worse
at night with the noise floor. Well, once again, so much for a short post ;D.

I wish all the wonderful folks like Keith Middleton and Jon DiFiore that worked there, all the best and hope we hear you
again soon, on the air!

WCGO's co-owner says AM 1600 will likely go dark "probably Sunday":
http://nwitimes.com/articles/2009/04/10/business/business/docf07a9a060f61bbd68625759300721302.txt

The story also confirms that the FCC "has given [station owner] Kovas permission to use WCGO's 1,000 watts of power and the power of other stations Kovas is shuttering in Aurora and Harvard, Ill., to boost the power of its WONX 1590 AM station in Evasion to 7,000 watts from 3,500 watts."

By the way, I noticed in the article that, at one point, the author spelled "advertising" with a "z".

I would be surprised if Relevant would sell 1279 at a reasonable price because that don't actually own 950. There is a complicated relationship with that station and relevant. In regards to1480, don't count on newsweb to do anything right. Look what they did to 850, half a mix of spanish and english christian music and no brokering in sight from ministries. They should change the name from newsweb to messweb.

Indeed they are a mess.
