I'm not from around Philadelphia so I'm more than just a bit sketchy on the geography, but I'd say that there is little likelihood of an AM on 1520 improving its signal in Philadelphia when it is prohibited from having overlap of 5 mV/m contours with 50-kW second-adjacent WNWR, which transmits from quite close to Center City (Roxborough, right?). Of course, the Philadelphia city limits encompass a lot of territory and I guess that Roxborough is quite a few miles from South Philadelphia.

So they're no longer "where the static is"?

I don't even know when they changed. Ever since that Philly-area internet talk show that used to discuss radio happenings ended, I haven't had time to keep up-to-date on low-power daytime only AM stations in the Philly Burbs, but just for the heck of it I Googled the station the other day and imagine my surprised to see that they switched from Modern Rock to Oldies.

Dan:
You're right. WNWR's transmitter site is in the Roxborough section of the city, about 5 miles from downtown.WCHE was at one time non-d with 250 watts, but is now 1 kW-D, 800 W-CH with different day and CH patterns.
Marc:
WCHE changed format from modern rock to oldies/talk when WCOJ was sold and began Catholic programimng.

Forgot to add that WCHE gets knocked around pretty badly during critical hours. WWKB in Buffalo starts hammering them, and a very loud 1 kHz heterodyne from a 2000 kW station on 1521 in Saudi Arabia also appears. At night, the het from the Saudi is so loud that it makes WWKB unlistenable.

I'm glad people like the format, but sorry to say this illustrates why transmitters and towers, and AM radio in this instance, simply don't make sense in the digital age. What's the use if you can't hear the signal? The sooner broadcasters convert to digital distribution the better IMHO.

Like most of what's been done at WCHE. 2 glaring holes in the line-up though. There should be room for 2 guys who are synonymous with Chester County Radio. How can you not have Robert Henson ride home with you after work in the afternoon? Surely there's room somewhere for Randy Dascher? I've worked with both guys and each have something to bring to the table.

I find it odd that a person with the username “oasisrulz” is happy that a modern rock station changed their format to oldies. When WCHE played modern rock Oasis actually got some airtime.

And to wcradio2, thank you for the compliment. It was a pleasure working with you as well.

Never knew they were Modern Rock, have not listened to them for ages or even knew they still existed until last Sunday when I was scanning the AM dial at the Concord Mall.....if I knew you bet I would of tuned them in bad reception and all....the funny thing is their format now with the sporatic oldies is so much better than what OGL puts on the table....go figure...

WCHE should be a prime candidate for an FM translator, if the FCC ever resumes processing the pile of MX-ed applications that were filed in 2003.

It's interesting that Chester County, with its large land area and population of 500,000 (nearly as many people as the entire state of Wyoming) never received a single commercial FM allotment -- and of its three local AM stations, two are strict daytimers.

DG.....WCHE operates with the same pattern on both its day and critical hour powers. Its a 2 tower system, basically aimed in the direction of Malvern and the Main Line, nulls off to the side to protect WWSM-1510 and 1510 Salem, NJ. The third Chester County station? Would that be WPHE-690 Phoenixville? WVCH and WPWA both have good signals over Chester County but they're licensed to Chester (Delaware County). WPAZ-1370 use to sell in northern Chester County but we all know whats happened to them. Nice to see RT here also!

Thanks for putting me on to WCHE. I just tried to get 1520 on my home radio suburban Wilmington, nothing. I checked it out online as I'm typing and yes their version of Oldies reminds me of what WAMS was trying to do on 1260 Newark. Probably both the then WAMS 1260 AND WCHE have the same issue. Getting the signal out to the audience. However, they sound great online live. I'll have to mark this as a favorite on my internet, great music. Thanks for the head's up. WOGL?? They're after a different audience. Their target audience wouldn't like what WCHE plays. So far I've not heard any spots, which could become the Achilles Heal for WCHE. It's now 7:15pm and they've played 15 minutes of non-stop oldies with no jock, jingles, ids, PSA's, or spots. If you like 50's-60's oldies, then this is a great place to hear them. Thanks again.
