WCIS Destroyed by fire

I wonder if someone left the coffee maker on? I don't drink the stuff and more than one night I came out to the break room to see the last little bit of coffee at the bottom of the pot about the consistancy of tar just smoking away......

It is great to hear that the radio community is lending a hand to the Whisnant family and WCIS. I read in the Morganton Herald that WMIT sent an engineer down to Burke County to help get the station back on the air.

Since the weekend, news reports are pointing toward arson. WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge(sp?) did a "one week ago" follow up on last evening's news. According to station staff, someone went through drawers and papers (desk and file cabinet drawers had been opened) and to apparently cover up they torched the place. The owner said that he couldn't believe someone would ransack a radio station looking for money--meaning that there are other businesses (besides a radio station) with lots of cash laying around. I am not sure if there was a burglar alarm at the site, but one of the owners told me that given the 20 years the station has been located in its rather isolated location that they've been fortunate to not have any incidents--until now. What is unfortunate that--even at 20 years old--WCIS had the newest equipment of any of the other 2 Burke County stations. In fact, the WCIS main transmitter was only about 5 years old which they got due to a power increase from 500 watts to 3500. The "old" transmitter was used as a standby. The station was set to celebrate it's 20th Anniversary on March 1, and hopefully they still can. However, when they get back on their feet I hope they can move the studio away from the transmitter site to a more secure location.

WCIS is Back After Feb 1 Fire

WCIS is back on the air today, March 1. However, they do have an announcment running that they are in a very limited programming mode and invite listeners to enjoy the music until they are totally up and running very soon. I'm sure it was their goal to at least be back on the air (in some fashion) by March 1, since the station went on the air March 1, 1988 to at least minimally mark the station's precise 20th anniversary.
I pray and wish the best for the Whisnant Family as they move forward.

Eric
