WCIT

Does anyone know how WCIT in Lima is doing since their switch to talk? I don't understand whay they went to talk to go up against WIMA.

What kind of niche is WCIT trying to establish? Does anyone think this was a smart move and if so why. I would be interested that if you owned the station what format would you place on WCIT.

I would admit I have my doubts about a second-tier talk station springing up in a small market such as Lima. Their talk programming, for a second-tier station is about as sound as you could get and it does look as though they have a local news presence at least in the morning.

But, I would remind you: this station has been a number of formats in recent years and not much has seemed to really catch on. Sure, you can be hyper-local in any format if...you have money to invest which is a tough road for a lot of AM's these days.

I can't really see a need for a second talker in Lima either. 940 AM previously aired oldies as "Lima's Greatest Hits." I had a feeling late last year sensing something was up. Morning man/PD Phil Austin moved to afternoons at WDOH. "Talk with Ron Williams" gave me a sneaking suspicion that maybe a switch to talk would be a given if they we're using Williams' show as an indicator if they got more listerners in the afternoon. A talk show on an oldies format sounds illogical to me but I'm guessing they were debating a change back then. WCIT tried talk before back in the 90s before Forever Broadcasting from Altoona bought it and moved R&B WLJM "JAMZ" from 104.9 to 940 which is where it stayed until Maverick bought it switching it to ESPN. 940 has seen a lot of owners and format changes over the decades since its top forty days as "Great 94" which I still miss today. It's also a shame that WCIT and other stations at 940 AM can't upgrade their power even though the Montreal 50K station has since left the airwaves.

The CRTC has indeed issued a call for applications for new stations to use the 690 and 940 channels. They had received an application from a joint venture of a commercial broadcaster (can't remember which one) and the Quebec transportation ministry to operate the channels as traffic-information stations, but apparently someone objected & they decided to open the channels up to all comers.

"notified", means the Canadian government has notified the FCC (via the Department of State) that the 940 channel is in use, and must be protected from interference according to existing treaties. (it is not unusual for non-existent stations to be "notified" in either direction)

There's a fairly humorous notification not far from Lima. There was for years a 730 on the air on Leamington, Ontario, almost due north across Lake Erie from Sandusky (CHYR used 730 at night and 710 daytime). In 1993, the station abandoned the 730 frequency, yet WJYM in Bowling Green - which is highly directional and blasts almost all its power in the general direction of Lima and Dayton - still must protect a station that hasn't been on the air in 18 years. Idiotic. The result is a signal you can't hear clearly from the east until you're almost right on the tower farm east of Perrysburg!

Both 710 and 730 were abandoned as CHYR moved to FM. 1190 is still notified for Prince Edward Island on 1190 even though it's been decades since it has been gone.

Interesting. Also intersting is how Jason Roberts has a deep knowledge of Lima radio.

Wilson: OK, you don't like me, I get it. Tough.

What you don't get is that I'm from this area...been in radio almost 40 years, am fairly well respected by those who know me. My travels these days take me from Bellefontaine and Indian Lake to Dayton and Dayton to Columbus and back on a more or less monthly or weekly basis. Obviously, I have heard the Lima stations over the years and have followed the saga of WCIT as people on these boards have posted over the years.

Does that make me an expert on everything? No. I never suggested such. But, when I have an opinion, I offer it. Sorry if that rubs you the wrong way. But, while not perfect, most of the time, I find my opinions are often validated by others on this board. And most people on these boards will tell you I am far kinder and polite to those on the boards whose opinions differ from mine...at least the vast majority of the time. By the way, I also speak quite frequently with programmers up around the Lima and Sidney areas, as some of them are on the advisory board for the International College Of Broadcasting, at which I teach radio broadcasting. I am also on that board.

Have a nice day.

Some people just have to make problems. I, for one, enjoy your on-air work (and also did when you were here in Columbus a while back) and think your insights are valuable because you're in the industry. You guys do a heck of a job down at 95.7 and I listen frequently when I'm in western Ohio. Keep contributing!

seriously? you guys taking me on because you "think" i don't like mr. roberts? c'mon.

Well, then...oh great sage...why did you suggest I wouldn't know anything about "Lima Radio" as though you have to be a resident there to know what's going on? In this day and age with streaming radio, (at least for some stations), and considering I get up in that region on a weekly basis, that's a pretty lame assertion to make. IMHO.

My comments were aimed, in a general sense as to the challenges a Tier 2 talk station would have to get over to succeed. It's tough in a big market to do this...for a station with, seemingly limited resources such as WCIT, it's an even tougher battle. Still, their programming lineup is about as solid as you can make it, given the limitations and being unable to get a lot of Tier 1 yakkers. The rest is up to them...

Why would you want to take me on? There's a lot of competitors (and former competitors) who like to rabble rouse and make noise. Ain't that right, Wilson?

To Jason Roberts. I agree with your view on WCIT. They have a solid line up for a second tier talk lineup. I also keep up on several markets too.

I just wonder if talk is really the right format. I believe the key in doing talk at this level is to be the best you can be in local news coverage and really cover the high school sports scene.

I wonder if another format choice would have been better, WDJO in Cincinnati has found their niche with oldies and WPFB was doing well for quite some time with Classic Country. In other words, not every radio station should go straight to talk.

Jason enjoy comments and hope you will contnue to express your comments.

That "someone" would be Bell Media, Canada's version of Clear Channel (controlling CTV, CTV2, dozens of cable channels and a modest radio empire - not to mention their namesake phone company).

Bell wants to upgrade their all-sports CKGM/990, which just acquired the English PBP for the Montreal Canadians, and now is desiring the 940 Montreal signal.
