WCKG change

I know I've mentioned this before to the disdain of the general radio population, but I was listening to an archive Leykis' Thursday show where he mentioned he was clearing on FM in two "huge" markets come January 3... one was changing format to accomodate him and the other was already in the format (presumably, talk;
"we're replacing someone").

Here in Phoenix, it's been out for awhile that CBS' KZON is flipping to FreeFM. That takes care of the station that's flipping; since I would take "huge" to be not any lower than market #15, could it be Chicago considering the lineup troubles there and the existing format?

I'm not basing that on anything other than process of elimination; Clear Channel doesn't run him, FreeFM/NY isn't biting, LA already has him, SF already has him, Dallas already has him, Philadelphia has local talk 'til 2am, Houston doesn't have FreeFM, WJFK/DC has Severin until 11pm, Boston doesn't have FreeFM, Detroit already runs him, Atlanta, Miami, Puerto Rico don't have FreeFM, and Seattle already has him.

Alright, so I'm a little bored this afternoon... but is there a chance in hell this could be?

WCKG is already Free FM so I doubt they're gonna do anything different.
______________

I understand I may be out on a limb here, but when Leykis announced coming to Phoenix, he said there's an "even bigger" announcement coming, which would indicate to me it's a top-14 market as I explained before.

And the point was that WCKG is already FreeFM, since he said the FM station will not have to flip to accomodate his talk show.

We know Stan & Terry are moving to middays (10AM-1PM) on 01/03,
so that means there is a hole after Dahl, 7-10 PM. We always
assumed Drew Hayes would go local in that time period, but I`m
sure CBS wouldn`t mind beaming in Tom Leykis in that slot? You
may have just answered the question of who`s in and who`s out
on 105.9 in 2006? Could be bad news for Java Joel, Madison and Sludge,
who have been doing weekend tryouts on `CKG and we all assumed
they were hoping to fill the 7-10PM hole.

Its possible it is Orlando, since CBS/Infinity owned WOCL Orock 1059 is stunting with "don't adjust your radio, it will all be over in XX hours" (which ends up being January 3rd. Also saying a major change is coming in 2006, the station just lost Howard. Which doesn't make much sense cause highly rated clear channel owned talk radio 104.1 exists already in Orlando.

The Real Radio franchise has had Tom on live before in the past, including in WPB, and claimed it didn't work out. CBS is also dumping hot talk in Tampa in light of Stern's exit and the weak AM signal (I always enjoy stations flipping because of signal -- the signal's not going to get any better, unless you're doing a Korean format to target "Koreatown", what have you).

Orlando is 20 markets below Phoenix. I live in Phoenix and would say that adding the market and calling it huge is being a bit generous, and Orlando certainly wouldn't qualify as being "even bigger".

Interesting to see what develops there, though.

...only if CBS is willing to ignore Dahl's complaints about it. Leykis has publicly stated in the past that Dahl has consistently blocked Leykis being added to WCKG. One of the more notable times Leykis has mentioned this was when Dahl pulled the ISDN line on his Detroit affiliate in mid-show and the station scrambled to put a stopgap on the air, eventually taking Leykis live at 6:07 Eastern Time. Leykis blew off the scheduled topics for that day and went with consecutive hours of Dahl-bashing......
______________

All of which fits in the "the listener could care less" category.

I think I can speak for Boston. CBS Radio owns two rockers: classic rocker WZLX and heritage modern rock station WBCN, which is passing on Free FM. Unless they wanted to add a talk host to evenings on WBCN (as that station did air Opie & Anthony when they were syndicated out of WNEW), I wouldn't expect Leykis on any CBS Radio O&Os in Boston.

There is an existing FM Talk station, Greater Media's WTKK, but that station airs a mostly conservative talk lineup and Leykis would appear to be a sharp turn from what GM is trying to run.

Dahl doesn't own WCKG, so CBS can put on whoever they want. Dahl would just have to live with it, because if he walks out because they add Leykis, couldn't he possibly breach his contract. Since Dahl doesn't own the station or is in mgmt., how can he really have any say in programming. Personally, I think WCKG is a dead dog anyway, it was already dead with Stern, so without him they are in real trouble.

CBS Radio has an FM rocker in Atlanta called Dave FM, which is just under 2 years old and its ratings are in the toilet. I'm not saying it's going to be the station to flip, but it's chance of doing so is better than it has ever been.

Just to clarify, Dahl's show was being syndicated to a station in Detroit. That station was consistantly being disrespectful to the show, so one night Dahl turned off the feed. Some of the funniest radio I've ever heard.

One could read the above to mean that Dahl pulled the plug on Leykis' show, which is completely untrue.
