WCKG Letter to Savage

As one who has been in the PD's position, I agree with Matt's letter. It is difficult
to patch the void that is left when a program is just gone, with little to no notice.

Listened to Savage since 2002. He and the show schtick sound tired, old. Reading and selling his own books every day. WCKG letter was right and don't expect any CHI stations to pick him up, been dropped by many lately. Not too easy to come back after alienating your fans e.g CHI RUSH, Schaumburg and Zion baseball 8)

I agree with some of the letter, but 1530 has sucked since summer 2011, when shows were leaving the old WJJG for other stations. The station is in the hole, plays infomercials and crap. Just let what is now WCKG continue to fall apart. 1530 was at its best playing a mix of music from 1900s (heard a few early records) through the 1960s. If 1530 participated in ratings, they would be dead last. WIND isn't well-rated either, but they too made a mistake in dropping Savage.

When they got rid of Mike Baker and his forgotten 45's that was it for me. Who owns the place now? They should get rid of the guy from q101 that is in charge of it now. He seems a little out there. Why would savage care what he writes? This isn't WGN or WLS it is a little station that no body listens to. WCKG is what they are calling it, is this supposed to make people think its the old WCKG? Either rent it out by the hour to locals who would like to do a show or put some oldies or mellow music there.

Mike Baker lived, breathed, and talked WJJG. And he was all about the oldies. It was totally unexpected and devastating to lose him, Joe Gentile, and other WJJG programming over a year ago to crap.

Matt DuBiel is the current owner. He is an awful person because he wants nasty, alternative rock, informercials (station must be low on money), Mancow, and Savage (both looped on a confusing schedule throughout the day). Yes, it is now WCKG, another sorry move by DuBiel to get ratings, which I know he isn't. Yes, 1530 needs the oldies, swing, jazz, and real music back. Alternative rock sucks. Nothing like roots music, which rock originated from. Mike Baker played that.

I have recordings of WJJG before the awful format change. Some really rare stuff. Alt-rock is not for AM at all. I was very, very happy that Q-101 finally went off the air since it had been crap for years. I am not sure whose idea it was to resurrect it on 87.7 FM. I didn't know Mike Baker had his last show in May. I stopped listening to WJJG in July 2011, when the station played mostly crappy alternative rock much of the time. I knew something was up to no good. I used to listen to Mike every Saturday. I had been a fan and listener of WJJG since 2003.

Proud to sound just like your parents?

And what makes you think that a daytime-only coffeepot AM station can make money on *any* format without going to brokered programming?

That's the point of this thread. WJJG was a brokered time station. Joe Gentile knew that more than well. He didn't p*** away time on growling rock music and nasty shock jocks. He gave airtime to responsible people that wanted to have fun while on the air. In return, WJJG (under Joe Gentile) made money and grew a very loyal listener base.

WJJG could have still been WJJG, if smarter management was appointed after Joe's untimely death last October 10th. Alternative bulls*** rock just does not have a market or that big of a fanbase, especially in the suburbs. We love our forgotten oldies, swing, jazz, etc. WJJG as another Q-101 was a failure right from the start. Matt just doesn't care. That explains why infomercials (a waste of time and have no place on radio) are now being played in certain time slots, especially on the weekend.
