WCKG still on backup?

Steve seemed to be saying late this week that they were still on the backup transmitter. Which makes sense, since the station was coming in terrible just in Joliet.

But has anyone noticed that the station sounds better? I assume from Feder's article that the CKG backup is the old XRT transmitter on Belmont. I always thought the music that the station played always sounded very 'flat', like it wasn't really in stereo (like a bad mp3), or was somehow not full spectrum.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I barely ever hear them play music anymore.

As for the backup, they've been coming in just fine in Kenosha the past couple days.<P ID="signature">______________

I can't tell if they're on backup because it comes in fine in Gary. Also WCKG's backup is 25.1kw @ 147.6m (approx. 483ft) and has nulls in nearly all directions and aiming most of its signal southeast. That's why it comes in fine in Gary. As for music, it's mainly played during the overnight hours as a filler for when they don't have any programs to air, such as reairing talk shows and airing paid programming from the Windy City Media Group.

I live near Crete and could DEFFINATELY tell they are on backup. In the mornings I can't get Stern in until I hit 294 - and at night I have to tune out Steve at the end of 294...... its driving me nuts!

As of earlier this summer, no more music:

9-11 PM Bill O'Reily
11-1 AM Dr.Drew & Adam
1-4 AM John & Jeff
4-5 AM Jim Cramer

With Stern from 5-10 AM (for now), this in my opinion is the best syndicated line-up Chicago has ever had. Way better than the local shows (i mean the guys that talk in between the 20 minute commercial breaks).

So typical 'CKG, their overnights are better than their dayparts AND their back-up transmitter sounds better than their main one!

On a side note, do you guys like John & Jeff? They are like a shot of adrenaline overnights compared to Steve and Johny on WGN.

Adrenaline, I guess. I haven't listened since they came back on (that's when I sleep), but they used to suck. Lame, hackish, formula talk radio. Gee, John takes one side, Jeff take the other and people call up and yell. Yawn. Phil Hendrie does a better talk show as a joke.

They don't even advertise there line up. Yes they have O'Reilly & loveline listed on their site, but NO PROMOTION AT ALL! They should put O'reilly on in Pete Mcmurray's place. Its a good head to head with Rush on WLS.

On an unrelated note, WCKG is now reportedly broadcasting in HD.

Phil Hendrie is great too! But you obviously dont listen to John and Jeff. They actuall both agree on most issues and the callers dont yell at them.

They have a new topic every fifteen minutes and do personal advice too.

I like them, but if you dont, Steve and Johnny have an old rockabilly guy on tonight on WGN. And dont forget "website wednesday" when old people call steve and johnny on advice upgrading their Commodore 64's.

As John and Jeff say "you just dont make the cut".

I said I didn't. Not since they were on WCKG the last time.

Yeah, that's what it is.
