WCKG to be Spanish??

Why do we need another spanish radio station for?
Don't we have enough of them stations already?

Before you know it, Chicago will be an all spanish city,
and putting out all of the american radio stations out to pasture!

Two out of the top 5 25-54 stations in Chicago (WOJO and WPPN) are Spanish language. The Spanish share is even larger in the younger demos. This is where the growth is, it's not oversaturated.

WCKG on the other hand has no numbers to speak of. It's a dead format. Spanish language would be a good choice, but whatever they flip to will end up doing better than what they have now.

If 'CKG flips active, which CBS has been doing in some markets, would that just kill off Q101 for good? Also how many spanish language stations nationwide does CBS have success with right now?

Isn't active more difficult to sell to advertisers? Other than Dahl, isn't their billing suffering enough as it is?

Spanish is the way to go for more ad $$$.

The Hispanic pie is pretty diluted already. There's more money in going after females and putting LITE out of its misery. I'm still thinking Fresh is on the horizon. Its a better payday in the end and a format both CBS and the likely PD are very familiar with.

They seem to be doing well with "El Zol" in D.C. Don't forget, CBS has a stake in Spanish Broadcasting (SBS) so they have that in their favor as well.

By the way, according to the article:

According to sources, the Bulls have had preliminary talks with other radio stations and are exploring possibilities. The probable landing spots would come from a group that includes WGN-AM 720, WMVP-AM 1000, WLS-AM 890 and WIND-AM 560. Sports talker WSCR-AM 670 isn't on the list because it airs Blackhawks games.

Face it, in this day and age where the Bulls and even the Bobcats have more pull than any NHL franchise in this day and age, can't the Bulls reach a deal with WSCR - WCKG's sister station, mind you - and relegate the Blackhawks games to another station? How many people really listen to hockey on the radio, anyway?

WCKG format

If they do change formats, IT SHOULD BE DANCE!!!! Dance needs to be in the Chicago Market since WBBM isnt playing much of that music.

Dance is a marketable "FORMAT" and not a demography format.

I wondered how long this would take. <sigh>

I don't know the current status, but DC and Tampa / St. Pete CBS Spanish language stations are a venture in association with SBS, where SBS provided programming and other types of guidance. This followed SBS' purchase of an FM in San Francisco from CBS in exchange for 10% of SBS swhares and options on 5% more. So, if CBS owns a piece of SBS, and it is consuting DC and Tampa, it would make sense that they would be involved in Chicago if the rumor is true.

Don't forget, CBS has a stake in Spanish Broadcasting (SBS) so they have that in their favor as well.

SBS's La Ley has been doing less than well of late per Arbitron. While there might be some synergy in doing complementary formats, the first order of business for SBS is fixing WLEY: they recently changed the GM and PD in Chicago, too.

It's an interesting puzzle. Would CBS compete with SBS, or would they run a new station together. Of course, we don't even know if the rumor is true. Welcome to Friday Morning Quarterbacking.

A question that I'm sure you'd know the answer to: what format would a new Spanish language 105.9 take on?

Most of the holes seem to be taken. You've got WVIV/WVIX covering Spanish pop and reggaeton, WPPN as the Spanish adult hits/AC station, talk with WRTO, and WOJO and WLEY doing Regional Mexican. What other niches are left that would work. There's no Spanish tropical or salsa station, but there doesn't seem to be any potential listener base for those formats. The only format missing that I can think of is a true AC like WPPN was when it signed on, but that would be going almost head-to-head with today's WPPN.

My prediction -- look for a rock-based format anchored by Mancow.

I think a format tweak on 104.3 Jack FM to Classic Hits will happen simultaneously.

Between the new 105.9, the new 104.3, XRT, and Score -- CBS would own the white male audience in Chicago. It would be very interesting to see if Emmis would react.

WONX does play tropical music a go0d portion of the day, and has been doing so for years. Although that is pretty much day time only they have that format. Before WRTO was talk, it was "La X tropical" for a number of years with a tropical format. Historically, 1200, although blessed with a fairly decent signal, has had trouble attracting an audience, I think it was always ahead of it's time format wise...It was known as WOPA "La wopa" spanish pop/ac with some rock and regional Mexican thrown in, until 1995, then it became "La X" with mostly Banda music, that was blown up to become "La X tropical" attracting a go0d portion of the Puerto Rican/Dominican population. While they are underserved, they are a minority in the spanish speaking community. It was very rare to see 1200 get more than a 1 share in any of it's incarnations. Sad cuz I was a fan of the station from 1992 until 2002, when I last heard it. Then again, I love spanish language radio, so I would have supported them no matter what. Is there enough of a population to make a go at tropical music again, 24 hours a day?

But you can't hear it in most of the market.

As the Mexican and Central American population grows, the Caribbean group becomes a smaller and smaller percentage of the Hispanic population. Add to this the fact that ropical is now a 35+ format, and you can't be viable in the format.
