WCKL 560 Catskill

Looks like the plug has been pulled for good on WCKL. Deleted in the database by the FCC. How many years has it been reduced to a one week a year operation prior to this ?

I used to listened to WCKL for many years when it was running WW1 standards around 2000 or so, but sadly it went off the air around 2003 and it won't come back until 2004 where the station went back on the air carrying a simulcast of WBPM's "Cool 92.9" where the announcer says at the top of the hour during a middle of a song saying:

1. "We're burning up the AM dial, this is WCKL Catskill, 560 Rock".
2. "This is 560 Rock, WCKL Catskill. Crank it up and rip the knob off!"
3. "Rock & roll and a whole lot of static! This is 560 Rock, WCKL Catskill. Crank it up!"

And then a year later, WCKL was simulcasting WZCR's "Cruisin' 93.5" for another year until it went off with a bang. And then, after all of those dead silence heard on 560, the FCC pulled the plug and WCKL was removed from its database and we will hear WCKL again!

Goodbye, WCKL! You'll be missed. :'(

I remember in the late 70's listening to Yankees baseball on WCKL on the way home from Grandma's house in Schenectady going up to Glens Falls. Interestingly enough, you could get it in Glenville just about to the Kayaderosseros Creek on the Northway.

Later in life, It was great to here Chick Watkins on the AM only format.

But you know, I could swear I hear this station on the air in July. Probably another 560.

Don't be too sure just yet. As Yogi once said, "it's not over until it's over."

Jim's right....this would be a good opportunity for somebody to start up a community minded AM.....hopefully somebody will pick it up and run with it!! Sorry, Kids- AM isn't dead.....

You are correct, AM is not dead, although could it be a commercially viable outlet? I would like to think so. Format ideas, anyone? I'm personally partial to Top 40, despite the typical arguments against it.

How would one go about purchasing the station at this point?

If there was time still left to, you could file a petition with the FCC, with the owner's consent of course (meaning you buy it from them), and the petition would have to state that the license renewal be granted upon condition of assignment of license and 90 days maxiumum to get programming on the station. Then there is the deal of leasing the towers and space from Clear Channel who owns the site. It's not an easy process.

Thanks, N/

I will do some research on the area's potential before any inquiry into an investment.

getting over the cheap channel hump will probably be a problem, "we don't want it but u can't have it"....like I said, community minded, niche station, oldies???? Good luck....it's an opportunity for somebody!!!\
