WCKY-FM

Why didn't BAS buy WCKY? We hear it's because Clear Channel is committed to selling it to minority interests to keep their relationship with the Rainbow Coalition intact. Jesse Jackson does a show for their Premiere network. As part of that deal, with a group from Columbus or Cleveland, the city of license will be changed. The tower and transmitter wouldn't move (can't, already short-spaced), just the licensed city.

WCKY-FM has applied to move the city of license to Pemberville (Wood County). This puts the station in the Toledo metro as far as Arbitron is concerned, although (for now) the transmitter site will stay the same.

Not sure what the point is, although Pemberville is within 25 miles of downtown Toledo, allowing CC to move the studios from outside of Findley into Toledo. From the engineering exhibits, it looks like the station could not be moved close enough to Toledo to become a factor in that market. For one thing, there's first adjacent WLEN in Adrian that would prevent such a move, even if WCKY was downgraded to a Class A.

hmmm? I hear URban radio calling. I gotta believe they would try for it since HOT has taken off so well despite WJZE's flea power signal.

This is merely a move to allow them to take the studios to Superior. They do have the chance to downgrade to a Class A and move outside of Bowling Green and down to 103.5.

97.3 WJZE(Oak Harbor) is already up there, 95.7 out of Gibsonburg & any number of other Detroit Urban stations. What would they do that for?

More work for Bill Rossini--but I think he was taking care of the Findley group anyway.

Didn't the Lima engineers take care of Findlay, or was that changed. I assume Denny Moon is still with the cluster. How many would that make that Bill has to watch?

Tom - You sound like you know allocations, so I'll trust you about this allowing the studios to be at CC Toledo, but I'm just pointing out the Urban Toledo studios are only a few blocks away, also in downtown Toledo.

Sorry. Previous post should have directed to KentuckyMedia, not Tom.

An additional part of the puzzle... The wording of the sales agreement between BAS and C.C. gives BAS the right of first refusal to purchase WCKY if C.C. decides to sell, as long as WCKY is licensed to Tiffin. We think changing the city of license may just be C.C.'s way of legally selling the station to someone besides BAS.

That makes the most sense to me as well. CC is famous for doing that, making an agreement then splittin town.

I read that both WPFX and WTTF were spun off. However, WPFX was sold to one person and WTTF was sold to another. Is that the case or am I missing something?

The alignment for WCKY moving to Pemberville would make sense if they were trying to target Bowling Green, but as you said..I think this is all part of a much larger move to spin off the Toledo cluster as a whole.

BAS pro shop. I know that Saga had signed a first right on Mansfield, have you heard any more about that cluster? It was supposed to be sold, however CC came in last minute and started jacking with the price.

Does Clear Channel really plan to keep WCKY? Pemberville is closer to Toledo, but it does not appear they plan to move the tower? Maybe city of license first and then address tower?

They are most likely greasing the skids for an easy move. Change the COL then move the tower.

The COL confuses me. So, this permits them to focus their efforts north, but the tower stays in the same location? Why would they want to keep studios down in Findlay? If they don't reduce power, how could they move the transmitter location? Is WCKY still under the Lima market or is it now under Toledo?

It confused me as well, until I began looking into allocations.

103.7 moving to Pemberville is a way to move the studio to Toledo. The current Findlay building lease will be up at the end of the year, and instead of renewing, they are just going to move the studios to Superior.

Then, they have the opportunity to downgrade to 3K after the COL change sometime in the next couple years if they so apply for it.

Putting 2 and 2 together, I not only came up with 4 (lame joke) but I also have a feeling the Toledo Radio is involved in this somehow. If CC eventually decides to jump ship, having the little 3k station that could in Pemberville will only be a bonus. If they can move that to Bowling Green before they jump ship and sell it for a couple cool mill to Toledo Radio, he would have a nice little duopoly in BG, ala 103.7 and 107.7.
