WCKY's Future?

I looked at the ratings for WCKY, remember, the 50,000 watt WCKY. It gets a 0.9 share vs. little WDJO's 1.0 share with a lousy nightime signal. How much longer can Clear Channel waste such a good signal with a format that has not/will not catch on in this market?

Even the old jazz crew from WNOP could do better than that. By the way, I miss that format, if you haven't guessed by now.

There aren't a lot of alternatives...best might be Spanish. Traditional jazz is a hyperniche, if it lands anywhere it'll be on an HD2. (WNUA, Chicago does just that on their HD2).

Perhaps if CC paid a little attention to WCKY, it would do better.

I listen from far away at night occasionally, and hear many flubs and automation screwups on WCKY. Last week, instead of Randi's show, they were airing the AAR feed of Majority Report live (which is not on WCKY's schedule). Then I occasionally hear overlap of ABC news feeds over shows like Lionel. Last weekend, actualities sent from ABC over what I assume is ISDN aired live over the show as they arrived. It sounds embarassing. Perhaps one place to start with this station is to get some better form of automation (since it's obvious that nobody seems to ever check in on this station during the day).

And how about doing something with the overnight paid programming? I'm sure the fire and brimstone stuff meshes poorly with the rest of the programming. Or perhaps the money they pull in from it justifies WCKY's existence (though I thought that virtually owning talk radio in the market justified it).

Either way, WCKY needs a little attention and TLC from whoever's running the show there at CC.

The ABC feed was from satellite. You could tell because about ten seconds before the news feed ("ABC Newscall") started, an automated recording came on saying something similar to "Satcom 0-5, Newsnet One, East". That refers to the digital version of the ABC satellite system that began in the '80s.

It is embarrasing to have a 50kW monster reduced to being a Pentium II in a broom closet... how much can you dominate talk radio in a market before you start making your third- and fourth-tier stations mediocre in order not to compete with the crown jewel of the cluster?

Amen!

I wish CC would put a real jazz format on this frequency, or even let the WSAI sports migrate there, and let 1360 become "real jazz". My company would sponsor a "real jazz" format on any Cincinnati station.

Only today, July 5, did I hear on air that the switch is to happen Friday. Unfortunately, I had to listen to 1530 to hear it. It was right after CBS News on the hour. I've never heard it mentioned on 1360, even though I had been listening to it more often.

I posted this elsewhere, too, but, as of this afternoon (7/7/06), only half of the switch happened. Sports Animal is on both frequencies.
