WCLK's long-time afternoon jock taken off air

Ken Batie, after more than eight years doing afternoons at Clark Atlanta's jazz station WCLK-FM, is being moved off air to special events. GM Wendy Williams said she's seeking a replacement but didn't give any specific reason why she took him off. She did say the station did not meet individual fundraising goals this fiscal year ended June 30. ($250K-$260K instead of the $300K goal.) She plans to tweak the formatics so there's more consistency throughout the day and folks listen longer and hopefully contribute more money.

Wow. I wonder why they need so much money. WREK gets by with an operational budget less than $1/Watt ERP.

I said less than $1/Watt ERP, and our budget was downsized last fiscal year too... it is essentially the same funding level as 1970, not adjusted for inflation.

But, the budget includes just about everything that we could think of, like money to spend at Ack, tube reconditioning, tower relamping, office supplies, promotion, computer equipment, staff stipends, PRSS/Pacifica interconnect fees, ASCAP/BMI/SESAC licensing, music purchases, etc.

It excludes major capital expenditures, which are generally difficult to gain approval for, but most of which have been taken care of over the past few years due to judicious spending and our move capital campaign (which still netted just a fraction of WCLK's fundraising proceeds). We have such a great studio setup now--all-digital--that we are thinking about IBOC and antenna upgrades.

Obviously we do benefit from free rent and physical plant support (like repair of our backup generators). We also benefit from Institute surplus.

There are always cost-cutting choices that can be made... like going with RF Licensing for PCN instead of Comsearch. I would never contribute to a non-comm that doesn't spend wisely or make full use of volunteer resources. GPB's "Temple of Public Broadcasting Excess", while a nice facility, doesn't make me inclined to cut them a check. Nor does their seemingly infinite appetite for direct-mail marketing.

yea, I think our budget at WUOG in *1980* was somewhere near $30K.
