WCMS on the Outer Banks looking again???

I used to live on the Outer Banks in the late 80's when I got out of radio after I got married, and have always missed the area. Read on All Access that WCMS is looking AGAIN for a PD/Morning Man.....the ad said looking AGAIN.

I'd love to go back to the Outer Banks and work and live, but the way they worded that ad worried me, so I thought I'd ask on here. Are they a somewhat stable station, or why are they looking again, and enforcing on the ad AGAIN..

Can anybody give me some info? Ida pre-she-ate it!

I was thinking the same thing...seems like it was just a few months ago they were looking. I thought long and hard about sending my stuff there then...gotta wonder what the situation is that they're looking this soon.

Interesting that it has to be negative doesn't it. I KNOW..radio is full of fickle. But they are looking again in just a few months. Do they do this on a regular basis..?

Every few months?

Maybe whoever they hired was moved witrhin the company, or received that coveted OFFER they couldn't refuse.

I've Googled the area. Doesn't seem shabby at all.

The guy that was there was Tom Jeffries, formerly from Charlotte/Boston/Cleveland. He took over back in November '10.

The OBX is an EXTREMELY nice area, but WCMS has a battle on its hands with WRSF, who has been in the format for almost 20 years now.

Tom Jeffries...I remember a legendary story from his brief tenure at KTAC in Tacoma, but have never been able to confirm it. If true...wow....what a piece of work.

not familiar wioth the Market. Rated?

and what's with the Dixie Website. Maybe its my pc, a lot of their "buttons" don't work. The DJs nothing.

Didn't Tom Jeffries "semi-retire" to the Outer Banks from Charlotte a few years ago?
Back around the time Mike "Moose" Smith also went out there?
Maybe Tom Jeffries is moving past "semi-retired" now? Maybe that's a reason for this recent change?
I don't know, it's just a thought...

Because it is a gig where you literally live and work on the beach they attract a lot of bigger names that otherwise would not go to a market that is unrated (when it was rated, it was like #245 or something). I'm sure once the novelty of being at the ocean wears off the ego takes a real hit. Might be why some of the stations' PD positions end up being revolving doors.

Most of the buttons are linked to the station Facebook page, while the new site is being built.

Mike "Moose" Smith here...

I don't think Tom was out here on the OBX in 2002 when I came here. As far as I know this is Tom's first extended stay on the banks.

His departure is not radio related, and I hate to see him leave. He is a good radio guy, and an all-around good guy. I wish that he could have stayed longer. If his situation changes he would be welcomed back with open arms.

I used "again" in the ad because we just posted this job last fall and I wanted to emphasize the fact that it was indeed open again.

Max Radio is not a revolving door. I would imagine the turnover here is about like any other small market operation. Myself and our GSM have both been here since 2002. 'CXL morning co-host since 1999. 'CXL PM Drive since 2006 (I think). Previous 'CMS PD/AM drive 3 years. Actually now that I have typed these words I'm not sure the term "revolving door" applies at all! At our recently acquired stations located in Wanchese (the former CapSan stations) the folks there are "long timers" too. Although we haven't has the situation occur recently I have always believed that small market radio is a training ground. Work here a few years and learn all you can to get ready for the next gig in a bigger market if that is what you goal is. When the time comes to move on I will even help you make the next step. The last time I was in that situation I assisted an employee in making the jump from the OBX to Entercom Greensboro.

As far as our "battle" with Dixie there really isn't one as far as I am concerned. The station was Country when we bought it. There wasn't any compelling reason to change it.... still isn't. Their coverage is better over more populated areas, ours is better over water and fish, although we do cover from Southern Shores to Ocracoke well enough. For the most part we do our thing and they do theirs. If we do good radio we will be fine.

Negatives? Small staffs at all of our stations. Every person, myself included, has to wear a bunch of hats. Everyone needs self-motivation to succeed here. Of course that is true everywhere else too. That IS the new reality of radio.... and many other professions as well. Living on the OBX ain't for everyone either! Personally I love it but not everyone does. The bottom line is this... it isn't perfect here. If you are looking for perfect your quest will be never ending, and I wish you luck.

Oh... and for the record I do not post jobs every few months or so. I posted the WCMS PD position last year. Before that I believe the last full time on-air opening was 2007.

So speculate away at what could be "wrong" or get your package to me through the methods listed in the job posting. Most people enjoy working here. Some don't... just like everywhere else.

Nice to see someone posting and using their real name and not bashing...Just simply stating opinions/facts.....

I concur with everything that Mike stated in his post. I used to work for Mike when Max Radio of The Carolinas took over the ownership/operations of the stations there in Elizabeth City/OBX. I miss the stations and the small staff there. I am now in upstate NY, larger market, faster paced.
If you are looking for a more laid back way of life, slower paced and something closer to a mom and pop type feel atmosphere, you love the beach and warmer weather, by all means, contact Mike "Moose" Smith and see what happens.

You won't regret it.

Geez I wish iw as still at it.

Anyway I know a lot of friends who are out, experienced and shouldn't be "on the beach" (well, maybe in North Carolina).

Can i send a couple yankees your way?

The Outer Banks is a sparsely populated, expensive area to live where most of the jobs go to friends and relatives, not outsiders. Maybe it is different in radio? I don't want to discourage but I have had first hand experience. Also the locals will follow you into a Hardees restaurant to yell at you about your driving. Thats when I left, only went back once to visit and found I didn't miss the area. (to say it nicely) I have other stories but don't want to ruin anyone trying to get a good nights sleep. OBX is on my boycott list. Good Night All!

stevations...

what about someone trying to make agood life for their family? Shjouldn't they have a chance to live and work?

and you what, you might just be a crappy driver..ok?

Stevations...Sorry you had a bad experience with the OBX. It's definitely an acquired taste. As many people hate it as love it because of the kind of 'difference' it evokes. I've lived in Tampa, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach(among other places) in addition to the OBX, and I can truthfuly say that I love the place. Over the years, people of money have come into this area taking advantage of the locals and acting like we're their hand servants, so, yes, even tho we appreciate tourists, we want to see what you're about rather than hear what you're about....and if you cut us off in traffic or jump in front of us in line at the grocery store...you're gonna hear about it...just like we'd expect to hear about it if the roles were reversed.

The car incident relates to someone stopping short in front of me and making a slow turn...I had to go around them to avoid a skid. A car going the other way was upset I went in the middle lane which would not have endangered their car, so it was none of his business unless they are a law officer. Outer Banks is the only place I know that has a restaurant called Eat and Get the Hell OUT. (I am not making this up) I was working at a job in Nags Head and the owners were too lazy to fire me so I show up for work and they look at me like...what are you doing here? The bridge to the cape was out and they hired some of their buddies that could not go south. This was a bunch of years ago so maybe things are better there now. It can be a boring place also. Some people like it, more power to you...just thought I would warn some people since they may not be able to afford to leave due to the high cost of living and low wages. Some others can use it as a stepping stone and move on. I have other stories but I think this is enough. If I had a family I would rather raise them in an area that had more diverse variety than an isolated area.
