WCMT-AM has FM translator now?

I worked at WTPR and WTPR-FM when I first got into radio back in the late 70's.( I'm from Paris)
It was long before Hailey bought them and turned FM into KQ-105 (I think)
Did he sell WTPR-FM calls, or can they just pick them up after the change?
Last I heard the AM (WTPR-AM @ 710) was still using the old calls.
"Froggy 104" now has the WOGY calls we once had in Memphis at Froggy 94
I turned Hailey down for a job years later when I worked at Q-102 in Jackson.
I DID hook him up with a guy named John Mack that worked overnights for us then.
I think he worked for Hailey for a long time.

WTPR is both AM 710 and 101.7 FM. WTPR, much like KF & KQ, is simulcast. Hailey does a pretty good job at keeping a balance between Paris and Union City. Broadcasting out of the studios in Union City, it would be extremely easy to pay more attention to the Union City folks, but I think he gives a fair balance to both areas.

John Mack was a wonder. Kept the evening shift for years and went to school during the day. Came out of the experience with Degree.

You are correct. The old WTPR-FM became KQ-105, picking up the call letters (WAKQ) that used to belong to 101.1 in Russellville, KY. They were the old KQ-101. (That station is now The Beat, here in Nashville.)

The current WTPR-FM, which now simulcasts WENK and WTPR-AM, was born in the early '90s with the call letters WTWL (for "Twin Lakes Country"). After a number of ownership and format changes down through the years, somewhere along the way, Terry acquired that station, changed its calls to WTPR-FM, and as discussed earlier in this thread, moved it from 101.5 to 101.7.

The old WTWL simulcast with WJZM in Clarksville, back when they were jointly owned. TennAire Communications, based in Russellville, KY, owned WDXN in Clarksville at the time, and was going to purchase the WJZM/WTWL combo, as well as 105.1 in Waverly (don't remember what their calls were at the time, but they are Solid Gospel now). I moved away from Clarksville soon after that, and that whole deal fell through. I was no longer living there by then, so I have no idea what happened, but I know that the former WDXN went through a number of management, format, ownership, and call letter changes in the years to come. I believe WDXN, as well as WENK and WTPR, were all at one time part of the old "Dixie Network" of stations in middle and west Tennessee and Mississippi. And I don't believe that TennAire Communications even exists anymore.

And that new FM country station in Dyersburg now has the WTNV call letters that 104 used to have, right? Musical call letters! ;D

Will someone tell Paul to talk into the microphone! During the morning show he has a bad habit of talking away from the mic...like he's looking for papers or a news story.

He keeps talking while he does this, yet all you can hear is the echo of what he's talking about.

Did anyone attend the birthday bash yesterday? I wish I would have gone over there, but there were home maintenance things to get done and family dinner.

Sounds like they had a nice turn out and several folks from the past came by for a visit.

Photos from the WCMT 50th anniversary open house (on June 1st) are now up on their website. They can be viewed in a slide show format. What I'm still wondering about is why they waited until their 51st anniversary (of WCMT-AM coming on the air) before they had a 50th anniversary open house! ???

Must've been within the last 10 (oops, 11!) years, because they had an open house for their 40th anniversary in 1997! ;D Paul is a stickler about being a perfectionist, so I can't see him letting something like this slide! ???

I believe I remember Paul saying "on-air" that they had planned on doing it last year but because of sickness and other related items, they had to hold on until this year for the celebration.

WCMT went on the air in 1957. so that does make them 51 years old almost if you check their website info... their stations had quite a few health problems Stuart Byars, Jim Cawley and others. a lot of the old timers showed up plus Terry Hailey, Gary Benton, TAB Whit Adamson.. Hailey and Tinkle were on the mic together one time.. they go back along way.. something like high school . At any rate they said on the air they had about 500 to come through their open house.. they gave away some money, prizes and had punch and cake and kiddie blow up inflatable. Sounded like a nice event. Larry Doxey and Chris Brinkley manned their microphones..

now if WCMT-AM would put savage 5 to 8 id be 100% happy..
That might be a tall order! 5:00 p.m. has been the slot for "drive time at five" for many years! However, they moved the "noon" news and swap shop a couple of hours earlier when they put Rush on the air, so I suppose anything is possible.

You ever see the movie Howard Stern's Private Parts?

There is a scene that reminds me of Paul almost every day.

Scene:

Program Director-"You talk too much. And very important, I want the time
and the temperature every 10 minutes.

...next day

Howard (on-air) - "My grandmother died last night. I spent all night with her
in the hospital. She... She had a car accident. By the way, uh...It's 6:22 and it's
39 degrees.

Chris and Paul can be right in the middle of a story and he interrupts for the time and temperature. It's hilarious. I know those things are important for the drive time, but pick an appropriate time to insert. :)
