WCND Shelbyville is......

940 "Jaime"

It's after 10pm and they're still on the air, though not coming in very well on the west side of Shelbyville so I guess they're on their ten watt nighttime power.

But they sound really great at full power, I think way better than 620. (It's hard to compare 620 and 940 directly, but comparing both to 105.7 I think 940 sounds more like the FM than 620 does.)

Tonight 105.7 had fútbol on at 6pm, and 940 still had the tubas going. There are plenty of hispanics in Shelby County, and they couldn't leave the station dark, right? Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea if they can run it with pretty much no overhead.

I wonder where the studio is? At the transmitter? Someone's garage?

I think part of the problem with 620 and 105 is they are trying to serve Louisville with mediocre signals. I think they should focus on the Hispanic population in Shelby, Henry and Oldham counties with the FM and Clarksville and Jeff with the AM.

Oh, and having the GM 3 hours away isn't helping them much, either.

I drove from Louisville to Lexington AFTER midnight this morning (3 July). WCND (is this call correct anymore?) did not ID in English between 0050 and 0110. They were very VERY clear on my car radio on I-64 from the East Side of Louisville all the way to the US 60, Versailles-Frankfort exit. This had to be a distance of 40+ miles. Pretty good for 10 watts of night power, right????

The call letters are still WCND, and I heard them give a perfectly legal ID at 1pm today. Previously in their IDs they had been leaving off the city of license, but they have redone it.

Last night at around 11pm they seemed to still be at their full power level, which shouldn't be the case. It may be that a system that was programmed to switch it automatically has lost it's program.

This one must be jumping the gun, they seem to do that more in the fall, especially on Friday nights.

Ah, the High School Sports exemption says (tongue firmly planted in cheek) the FCC allows daytimers to operate at night to air high school sports. This way broadcasters can better serve the community, help people and perhaps win a Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. Did I mention it serves the community?

Gosh I need a job doing P/R for the NAB. ;D

Used to be, the stations would at least try to hide it. Like feeding the transmitter in the dummy load...in the attic...made of very long wire wound resistors....at twice the normal power!

Now that the FCC has no teeth, station owners/managers just don't give a damn anymore. As long as your public file is in order, and your EAS logs are correct and up to date, they could care less if you are operating day power at night.

I called the owners of WCND today to let them know about the problem. Someone answered the phone, and they were very nice. And it seems that tonight they have reduced their power.

Did you find a local number for them? Any idea where they have studios at?

No, I called the number on the FCC info. Michigan?

I asked her where the main studio was, and she said something-town in Louisville.

That narrows it down! Wish I understood Spanish, but I did hear the legal ID in English today.
