WCNH money woes?

Has anyone else heard a rumor about problems at WCNH-LP 94.7, the low power FM station which broadcasts classical music? The rumor is that they are scrambling for funds to keep it on the air. If they don't get an influx of cash soon, they may have to give up the license. There is nothing on the web or on their website about needing money beyond the usual underwriting information. Anyone know anything?

How much can it cost to run? Judging by the photos on bostonradio.org they're not exactly in the high rent part of town. I don't know what kind of fees they pay for their syndicated programming. Not counting initial purchase price of the equipment (which may be paid for by now), you'd almost think the backers could run it out of pocket. Maybe one or more are losing interest?

How much can it cost to run? More than you might think.
I'm betting tower rent is at least a couple hundred a month, and about the same for the electric bill.
Being classical probably exempts them from the bloodsuckers at ASCAP/BMI/SESAC, but they probably pay their program syndicator and Harry and his family need to eat. Factor in the cost of PC's, Internet, and preventive maintanance, and my uneducated guess is at least $2500 a month

I was perusing the playlist, and WCNH, via the WFMT Beethoven network, actually plays a fair amount of 20th-Century music. Most of it is from before mid-Century and may be in the public domain, but I saw pieces by composers who may be alive, or who died (and therefore began decomposing) recently. For example, I saw a listing for someone named 'Carter'; if that's Elliott Carter, he's definitely still breathing. There was a piece by Conlon Nancarrow who passed away in 1997. There was also a listing for Bohuslav Martinu, who died in 1959. Some of his pieces may still be under copyright.

I love rumours, especially when they come from left field. WCNH was never awash in cash but it's doing okay. Thanks to some generous supporters, America's only 24/7 classical LPFM is safe.

Hmm. I don't know if this one was out of "left field" because I also heard there are money problems at the station. And the source who told me is a pretty good one. I guess I will email Harry to find out if it is legit or not.

Well my source is pretty good too. WCNH is not going anywhere.

Well, I heard it from an affluent member of the community who got hit up for money to keep the station on the air. Who's your source? BTW, no answer from my email to Harry about the situation.

Hey Tony,

This could be a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing. Because it's preferred that way. Or just that you don't give away that you're not so bad off if you're trying to get extra $$ from solicitations. Might even be a projected status, like not hurting now, but will be later kind of deal. Ultimately from this convo, I've decided CNH is not undergoing current money woes but may be in the future.

It's accurate to say any radio station that relies on listener donations would be in trouble if those donations stopped coming. That being said, don't start a "death watch" for WCNH anytime soon. (LOL)

Harry emailed me earlier today to explain the situation. He said, "WCNH is fine" and, I believe him when he says it.
