WCNZ 1660 & WMYR 1410 "The Avenue"

Well yeah, but that doesn't work on AM...

Actually come to think of it, I will complain about something: I wish the DJs would announce the songs either before or after they're played!
That was a necessary evil before artist and title fields became standard on all radios.

Not only does it not work on AM, but you can't always be looking at the radio dial when your doing other tasks, not all radios have that capability and it's not exactly prudent to look at the dial when you're driving.

We wrote that for the guy in the future, archiving this thread ;D

Back to the topic of the thread, just learned that Timeless Cool is a syndicated format, but The Avenue might be their only affiliate.
Their promo is just under three minutes long and sounds much better (less processed) than their stream.

Yep. That's the sum total of affiliation. The idea is good, but the execution is quite poor.

I just tried to find the "Route 66" format I heard in the Tampa Bay area... Must be locally generated only. Too bad. The music mix was really good!
It was somewhere on AM.

The Route 66 format you heard was most likely WSDV- 1450-Sarasota and WDDV 1320-Venice; between the two stations they pretty well cover Englewood to the waterfront (water skip enhanced) in St.Petersburg. There is a mono internet stream, but right now, I don't have the url, will try to post it later.

btw- I just returned from a week in Albany NY and the only Florida station I heard at all was 1660- the Avenue coming in the car radio midway between Hudson NY and downtown Albany and coming in with a very solid signal from about 7:10 - 7:30 then nothing, so I'm assuming the power drop from 10,000 to 1,000 watts was at 7:30pm.

That's very good, drt! I can't even get it well in other spots here in FL.

Same here, I was surprised! I've had trouble picking it up in Punta Gorda and North Ft. Myers.

Here is the link for WSDV 1450, both 1450 and 1320 have called themselves "the Dove" in the past and the url still indicates this........... this url is for their home page with a "listen live" (in mono) link on the left hand side.

Was told that WAVV had to keep costs down...not only closing the Web feed, but also the IBOC.

WAVV & "Clucks" are different animals. KLUX is the more traditional sounding B/EZ one would hear on FMs in the 70s....WAVV has that plus a few lounge-style artists, some quite modern (Buble e.g.)

cd

Yeah, I know, I'm a few months late on this one, but...

But with all due respect to the good folks at WAVV... if they have to "keep the costs down" to the point where they can't afford a few hundred bucks a month to keep their web feed, something is extremely wrong. I don't care how old the demos are on that SOB, it's got to be extremely sellable. They've GOT to be rolling in cash. Local direct cash.

I know some great salespeople who would love to take a crack at it...

The wave also turned their IBOC off, after paying thousands of dollars for the equipment, so they could avoid paying the service fee to ibiquity, yet they claim to be the traditional #1 rated station in their market.

Just found the final answer here:

"The "Timeless Cool" format is a creation of Sovereign City. The format originated on Appleton, WI's WOVM-FM, which would play Standards overnights from Sovereign's Oasis Radio Network, calling itself "The Avenue." (WOVM now airs the music all day long and calls itself "Avenue 91.") Soon after, the music played expanded and then came to Chicago's WNTD-AM overnights. By the end of last year, Sovereign, using the name Timeless Cool Music, LLC, turned the format into a syndicated/satellite format for stations nationwide to purchase. Despite a large marketing push inside industry magazine & websites, and the hiring of a staff to sell "Timeless Cool" to other markets, the satellite format has not caught on at all. It only airs on five stations, all of which are owned or connected to Sovereign (and that number will soon drop down to four stations). It recently picked up a small AM station in South Carolina, not seemingly owned or connected to Sovereign, airing the format overnights only and as an experiment, while doing talk during the day. The station previously was silent for many months.
The future for "Timeless Cool" and the "Avenue" stations may not be so "timeless" after all."

Interestingly, Janet Planet and Ruby are established jazz and R&B singers, respectively.

If they'd fine tune their music, it might work. Too many bizarre songs and no announcing of most of the music played. I don't think it's gonna work. Nothing seems to have changed since they started a couple of years ago.

Has anyone actually seen any ratings (Spring 2010) for Fort Myers-Naples since the format arrived in the market last fall? It appears as though the 12+ stuff ordinarily released for public consumption is embargoed--or at least limited to subscribers-only status. It would be nice to have some indication how it's being received.

To my ear the format skews just a little too old--like a 65-74 core, maybe--which is a pretty tough sell in most markets. But for AMs--especially in markets like Fort Myers-Naples--it might be viable. Trouble is, there aren't that many markets like FM-N.

Could the format be tweaked a tad younger? Say 55-64? Yeah, I think so--but it would be tough. I'm 62 and started listening to Top 40 radio in the mid-fifties (courtesy of older siblings). There was always a jazzier/more sophisticated side of Top 40/pop, but I'm not sure those 5 songs would make a format...

I've noticed that these stations didn't register a blip in the latest Arbs. Worse yet I'm hearing that both have been off the air at one time or another recently. I hope that things will get straightened out soon. It'd be a shame if Timeless Cool was no more down there.

"Route 66" is one of Clear Channel's "Format Lab" formats, like what you basically hear on WOLZ most of the day, or "Pride Radio", or "Club Phusion" on FLZ HD-2.

There was another "Route 66" 'affiliate', albeit short-lived: WMGE 94.9 HD-2 in Miami, which has since changed its HD-2 format a couple of times, at least.

Can I notify all potential programmers of adult formats here:

If you don't have live DJs or voice-tracking around the clock, you should record each song with a "Title & Artist" tag at the end. So as the song fades out, we hear "That's New York, New York from Frank Sinatra" or "Michael Buble with Haven't Met You Yet."

Many soft AC stations do this, such as B101 in Philadelphia and WSPA-FM Greenville-Spartenburg. They figure a lot of times these days, the DJ isn't going to announce the names of the songs, either because there is no live DJ or because the format doesn't call for it. It's a bit of extra work to get someone, hopefully the same person with a good voice, to do this for every song in the format. But it's worth it because for adult formats, where you're not playing the same four Lady GaGa songs over and over, people want to hear the artist and title of the song. Surveys say this is one of the chief complaints of radio listeners. If you know you don't have the funds to have live DJs or even round-the-clock voice-tracking, at least tag each song with the title and artist.

I would also record a non-tagged version of each song into the system for when you do have a live DJ, although B101 and WSPA-FM don't bother. The DJ simply lets the voice tell us the title and artist and then he/she begins talking about the weather or who advanced at American Idol or whatever.

Especially a format like Timeless Cool where the programmer is trying to incorporate contemporary swing and standards into the mix, there's even more reason to tag each song with title and artist. I think The Dove in Tampa and its new sister Easy 93 in Miami should do the same. Same for WAVV Marco and WJPT Ft. Myers, two more adult stations where titles and artists are only sometimes heard.

Well in this era, if not a voice tag, at least remind folk over-the-air, IF their website decides to list the recently played songs, to refer them there....that's how I'd handle it.

Easy 93 has RDS readout, for those with FM receivers so-equipped....their RDS does indeed list title/artist.

(That being said, I do miss the Drake-Chenault "Hitparade" style, with a tag on practically every song.....the "other" Easy 93.1 in NJ does imitate this.)
