Can someone please tell me the thinking behind the WCOJ's new morning show?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a radio expert, but I simply can’t make sense of this program since Joe Thomas left. For example, during this morning’s sports segment the new guy reported the score for the Pittsburgh – New York (Islanders) game, just didn’t mention the Philadelphia – Boston game. Does that make sense?

Also, they’ve seemingly gone to an all-news format, with no callers. But they’ve done nothing to enhance local news coverage. I mean, isn’t this why someone would listen to a local radio station, for the local news, and not for world/national news? If I want to know what happening in Iraq, I’ll read the Inquirer, Washington Post, surf the net, etc. Why would I defer to the former oil-changer Hack Henson, who is merely reading a blurb he stole from a newspaper?
 
It appears that they're cutting costs across the board. They're obviously not paying this new kid what they paid Thomas or Bryant before him.

Cutting costs and running leaner and meaner usually means a station is getting ready to be put up for sale.

Latin? Big Hispanic population in Chester County. (Of course, WCHE would be a better choice for the moniker The Big Chalupa.)

Religious? They've got money to burn...in Hell!

Maybe a combination of Religion and the Swap Shop. WCOJ, Where Christians Order Junk.

Brokered, ala WNWR? God all night, RJ all day.

Or maybe Robert Henson will buy it after it's been stripped down to the bare bones. All German drinking songs, all the time. Call Bob Hamilton, I think we've found the next big thing.
 
Keep in mind that they did run an ad for a news person several weeks back (which does not appear to be the newbie they just hired as host). Perhaps this newsperson would actually gather local news and contribute content to the morning program. That way, Henson can lighten up on the usage of all the canned statewide radio pieces.
I wonder if anyone told the new guy that, since the Art Douglas era, it is rare for anyone to be in that job for more than two years.

As someone who isn't familiar with either the station or the area it serves, what format should this station be doing?
 
I think a full service AM, playing "MOR" music ala WIP, might work, if it were sold properly. Cost a few bucks for the talent, but if it hits, it would be worth it. Takes money to make money, as they say.

Hey, Randy Dascher on WCHE read this thread on the WCHE morning show today. It gave him quite a laugh. He and Jay Shur, the station owner, do a nice job with the morning show. Some funny stuff!
 
Well, striping her down to prepare for a sale would make sense. Thanks for the info.

But at least there's always something to chuckle about when listening to the new guy. Today's gem: while reporting on the DUI arrest of an airline executive in Arizona, the morning guy said that "police clocked him at 20 miles per hour over the speed limit and stopped him at the intersection of (Fifth) and (Main) streets." Yeah, we folks in West Chester know that intersection in downtown Phoenix very well. Thanks for the vital detail!
 
I wonder if anyone told the new guy that said:
If you go to work for a station like WCOJ in that size market and stay for more than two years, your radio career is doomed. Two years is all you should stay. Otherwise, you are considered to be of no talent. At the two year mark, you must move to a better station in a bigger market.

I heard that too. Yeah, Randy likes checking this place out, and he kinda turned it onto me as well...

Randy, any chance I could get an aircheck of it? I'd like to have heard it but I've been busy being "Mr. Mom" for three kids these days. (I hope you went easy on me!) :)

Thanks, I appreciate the thought. We are well. One of the side effects of a long radio career is that you develop an "unemployment strategy." So we're doing fine. Living on the state dole and working Saturday's at 'DEL. Hoping to stay local but nothing concrete to report yet.

As a friend of mine used to say; "It beats cutting up chicken parts for airline food."
 
Actually, that stems from the time that I worked at a station in Ocean City, MD and we had some loyal listeners that used to call us from "the de-beaking room" at Perdue. Talk about a tough job! Haven't seen Mike Rowe take that one on yet!

This website just sent me a warning, about me message critical of Robert Henson.

Funny... Henson can slam the city council members of Coatesville all he wants. But he reads one critical thing about him on a message board, and he goes nuts.

Robert Henson: no backbone.
