1. Computer Corner

3. Wow! Phoenixville

I think it's the Computer Corner. The hosts, Gene and Joe, are great. Good information delivered in a no-non sense fashion.

Everything that Henson does wrong, the two hosts for Computer Corner do right. And this is what makes great local radio...listening to local people you respect, trust and like. These two guys are sincere and credible, and they're exceptionally knowledgeable. I'd like to see their show expanded to two hours. That's why, during their show each week, they receive several calls and e-mails from listeners.

In contrast, look at Henson's show on Friday... during the first two hours he received two calls. One first caller was Henson's friend (and they talked for 15 minutes about old records the friend put up for sale on eBay) and the second caller's was Henson's kid.

Now, maybe Henson is a great guy off the air. I just don't know him to say. But if Henson receives one call an hour during the PM drive time, is that an indication he's doing a less than adequate job as a show host? How does a station measure a host's success and/or appeal? Maybe this is a question for the real radio people out there... I just don't know enough about the business to say.

Why does this station, WCOJ, get more attention on this board then just about anyone? I've got nothing wrong with this station at all.. but I'm just curious......

I will definately have to check this out, thanks for the reccomendation!!

Don't you know the rules yet? We're only allowed to talk about stations that have no listeners, a horrible format, and no coverage. Since WPEN recently increased their power, the only station left to trash is WCOJ.

Actually, the more that I think about it, WCOJ's best program was the morning show that they had for two years up until a month or so ago. It is hard to beat a host who put big market energy and effort into a morning program on a small station like WCOJ.
I bet Joe even had most of the national/global personalities he did interviews with believing that they were in contact with a real Philadelphia station (that is a complement, Joe).

Actually, it's quite a compliment. Thank you. Though a few like Dave Barry and Kristen Chenoweth knew where they were. (Both having lived in the area.)

Wow, I did not hear the interviews with either of them. Would have loved to, though....especially Christin Chenowith. So cute and so talented.

Hey Joe, I hear that WSTW is looking for a P.D. Nudge, nudge, say no more.

I too find this very interesting. How is it that a small suburban station in one of the nation's largest markets gets so much board time? I've heard the station, and while there are certainly better offerings, especially in a huge market like Philly, if you moved the thing to a small Pennsylvania town, it would probably do fine. So how is it, that there's nothing more interesting to talk about in the city of brotherly love??

If I, as WCOJ's former PD, may opine....

There are two or three reasons that I have found that smaller, community stations get so much attention.

1) There is a sort of personal connection to a station that attends to just your home area and not some generic metropolis. Therefore, if someone feels that the best efforts are not being made on their behalf, it causes a more personal response than the simple, 'turn the knob' reaction that the big city stations have to fight against.

2) Since the hosts on these stations live in the same community as the listeners, there is less of the implied ability of a "big city" host. So people tend to critisize them where a big market jock gets a pass. I offer this as proof: The lowest-tech on-air studio I have ever worked in belonged to WNEW-FM in New York City. The 'legendary' jocks that I worked with overslept, missed segues because they were on the phone and all the other things that happen to small market jocks. I've worked with much more talented people at smaller market stations who, nonetheless, are awestruck that I worked with these 'legends.'

3) I hate to say this, but there is a certain degree of; "Heck, I could do that better than so-and-so" behind these posts as well. And, in some cases that is warranted. One of the terrific hosts I work with at WDEL is Al Mascetti who had exactly zero radio experience before and is great. So experience isn't always the ticket in this biz.

Joe Thomas

Joe, it seems that a small number of posters is responsible for most of the WCOJ posts. An even smaller number has started the WCOJ threads.

It's also interesting that some small stations in the region get almost no attention, including WNPV, WBCB, WNJC and WSNJ get little or no notice here despite some good work being done there. Even WDEL receives rather sparse notice here.

WCOJ is a small station with a huge alumni association. A lot of people have worked there and many of them hang out here. Interestingly enough, New York TV anchorman Ralph Penza's obit was posted recently on the New York and Philly TV boards and guess what, he had worked at WCOJ.

I realize that a lot of people in radio feel obliged to praise employers and co-workers but you may be speaking here against your own interests as an experienced radio guy looking for a full time job. Al Mascetti was hired without experience based on his "name recognition" as a columnist for the Wilmington News-Journal (one of America's poorest newspapers). Michael Smerconish has also been mentioned in this thread as someone widely criticized here. That guy got into radio as an injury lawyer working for Beasley's law firm. You and your predecessor, Steve Bryant, are people with experience and ability who are on the sidelines as jobs go to lawyers, political operatives and stand up comedians. Adding insult to injury, a major talk show producer and talk radio PD says on this site we all should be "grateful" to him for giving an opportunity to "walk-ins." Your view on these amateurs who think radio looks easy may change when you see people wandering in off the street and getting jobs which should have been your's.

Mascetti may look good by comparison to his competition. Let's see how well he does against Glenn Beck.
