WCOJ's death - Three Months Out

Those of us who commute through Chester County still mourn the loss of the local radio voice that was WCOJ, three months out.

While the current licensee of the 1420 AM frequency may be utilitizing it to the benefit of some, there is absolutely no community service element involved in the programming offered.

Although some of them took quite a ribbing on this board at times, missed are the contributions of Rob, Gene, Mary Cantell, J.T. Morgan and Joe Harnett. We miss all of you folks and wish you well in whatever you end up doing.

Heck, I even still miss former AM drive guys Joe Thomas and Doug Stirling. The best to each of you!

Please log in and give us an update on what you all have transitioned to.

But isn't this happening everywhere? Come to think of it, it's been a while since I heard a station announce that it's serving in the public interest for its license renewal.

Doug manages Brandywine Radio, which now offers community service programming similar to that of the old WCOJ:

BrandywineRadio.com didn't set out to be another WCOJ, however, with their change in format, we felt it would be advantageous to pick up some of their programming. As a result, we now "air" Ron's Swap Shop, Computer Corner (hosted by Gene Mitchell), Health Focus (hosted by Ben Briggs) and some of the Sunday morning programs including Inspirational Moments. Besides Ron McNeil and Gene, other former 'COJ staffers working for us in some capacity include Matt DeFazio (afternoon news) and Pete Reinert (news reporter). We also picked up most of WCOJ's high school football schedule during the second half of the season and currently are broadcasting about 3 high school basketball games each week. Bill Mason helps us with the play-by-play.

I do know PJ Morgan is now a producer for the Laura Ingraham show in Washington D.C. (a major plus for him!) and Joe Harnett is a production engineer/producer at WFIL/WNTP. Don't know anything about JT or Robert.

Probably the biggest difference between BrandywineRadio.com and WCOJ is we don't broadcast any syndicated programs. All programming is generated locally in the Brandywine Valley (Chester, Delaware, and New Castle Counties).

BTW, we are planning to broadcast a live concert of local bands from Kennett High School on Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. This is the kind of programming we are scheduling. If anyone out there has an idea for a local show, let me know. I'd be glad to talk to you about it!

Hi Doug:  Thank you for the update.  It is great to hear that you still have your "finger in the pot" of the local communications scene.  I see on Brandywine Radio's website that one of the contact persons is a "Lloyd."  Is this Mr. Roach?

JT Morgan was the most recent WCOJ morning guy, but who is  the "PJ Morgan" you mention?

BTW, I do know that, as of last year, Joe Thomas was with a radio station in Charlloettsville, Va.

The best of luck with your new venture.

Yes, Lloyd is the Lloyd Roach, former owner of WCOJ.

PJ was the production engineer when 'COJ was sold. I know Joe was doing some part-time work in Wilmington. I'm glad to hear he found something stable in VA.

That reminds me. Greg Neft, former morning news anchor at WCOJ, was in Richmond, VA the last I spoke to him about 2 years ago.

The PJ you mentioned is PJ Mullen part of the Rt.81 cluster. He left WHYL am 960 in Carlisle as operations mgr. for COJ. Great guy with lots of talent. Now doing great in D.C.

Joe Thomas, here. PD and AM Drive of the new top rated N/T in Charlotteville, VA; WCHV as well as PD of Sports Talker WKAV. Hey Doug, how is everything going up there? Say hi to Lloyd for me. I'm currently trying to copy the shows Ben and Gene did with people down here for my Saturday lineup.
