WCOJ's First Edition is Redunkulous ... And Not in a Good Way

Not to continue the constant WCOJ abuse that occurs on this board, but I'm going to. I visited their website today and found the "First Edition" page for their new morning show. If the show is anything remotely close to what I've seen on their site, the listenership must be dying even quicker than ... well, quicker than the listenership of Chester County.

I should point out that I have never heard the show, and no longer live anywhere within listening range of WCOJ. But I have to imagine the morning show must be unlistenable. I watched a 10 minute youtube clip from JT Morgan (the host) which is on the site, and was barely able to make it through that. Granted, Mr. Morgan is a "radio personality" and not a director, but the video does not help his cause in generating listeners at all.

I applaud the management for finally taking the internet seriously, but just having a website with some nonsensical information about the host and a MySpace page will not draw the listeners (especially those who are using MySpace).

Mr. Morgan is young and will probably get much better with age, so this is not necessarily an attack on him. But who is reining him in? Who is allowing to him to put up a profile which makes no sense, and even worse, is not funny. And I understand the idea of starting somewhere. But honestly, they fired Joe Thomas for this?

Response from people who have actually heard the show is encouraged.

Tried to listen 2 times in the past week on the way to work...both times the host and some co-host ended up either talking about professional wrestling or making pro wrestling references. At best it sounded like a college station show. I was hoping for a bit more. Alas, I must not be in their target demo (Male 42).

Dreadful! I can't even call it radio. It's almost as sophomoric as that Ham Radio show on WNJC. In fact, that show, horrid as it is, sounds better from a production standpoint.

The host bashes the legendary Art Douglas on his part of the WCOJ website. Way to alienate the existing audience while trying to get new listeners! It is sad, very sad, that a once great little station is running this kind of garbage...and in morning drive to boot.

Listening was like watching an animal die while it was suffering in pain. That might be enjoyable for someone like Michael Vick, but not the majority of people. WCOJ, put yourself out of your misery and go all syndicated religion and be done with it.

If this lasts longer than a month or two, this guy must have photos of the current owners in duck suits. Or, maybe he's an otherwise unemployable son-in-law.

"At best it sounded like a college station show."

Hey, Knight, you owe an apology to college radio stations everywhere!

The JT Morgan U-Tube video is a hoot. He gives a tour of the station. It seems as if the facilities and equipment are nice enough, but he could have had the production studio cleaned up before presenting it to the world. Also, there were no sales people to be found in the sloppy looking WCOJ sales office. I guess they were all out tracking down the next hot vaccum shop or pizzeria account since repeat WCOJ advertisers are likely increasingly hard to come by.

I like to listen for CBS news, local traffic reports and Osgood in the morning, but since Joe Thomas left, everything in between those elements is too painful to stomach.

I haven't heard this, but I will give it a listen to get my own opinion. Who are these two guys? I mean, are they two older guys trying to act young, and hip? Or are they two young guys?

I haven't heard it, but it seems like the show is hosted only by JT Morgan who, according to his MySpace page is 26. The "co-host" that knight heard was probably Robert Henson who does the news during the morning show.

That would mean they actually have some sort of target demo. I can't imagine the management actually thinks they're going for a young demographic (although I guess that's the assumption with a 26-year-old morning host).

The Youtube video is a trainwreck. As far as the sales people go, I know the rule for the sales staff used to be you had to be out of the building by 10am, so it's no wonder they weren't around. Plus Ron McNeil was in the studio, so it had to be sometime between 10am-noon.

their target demographic consists of people who want to hear their name called during the morning "Happy Birthday" segment.

For the record, pretty sure it was not Henson I heard. I know his voice from my past attempts to listen in the afternoon during my drive home. That too was a failed experiment on my part, have not listened to him since he (Henson) tried to be funny (tried is the operative word here) by going around the office looking for signs of co-workers ready to 'go postal' around the time of the Amish school shooting. Not funny and classless. Alas, they are consistent...horrible in the AM drive, horrible in the PM drive!

And once again, a radio station that barely can be heard in Philly..a suburban station with little power, and that no one cares about, gets all sorts of attention. You guys must really have nothing to do with your lives.
Did you all get fired from there, and have nothing more to look forward to? Why does anyone give a R-A about this? Dudes...move on..get a life...buy an I-POD, play your 8-tracks..find a girlfriend..something, anything.

I love little baby ducks...old pick-up trucks.......

Why, oh why, is so much time wasted on some little flea-powered station that no one in its home area even listens to? Who in the Hell cares?

Just wondering because this friggin' topic about this unimportant station always seems to be tops on the Philly board.

Is there NOTHING going on here? Surely there must be better things to talk about. Maybe some part time jock got a new puppy or something. Or, let's have a discussion on who has the best cheesesteak. Anything other than this.

Zzzzzzzzz..... ::)

Okay, having heard the show, I have a suggestion. At the moment, there is a brokered host named Mike Phillips on WNJC. He is no worse (as well as no better) than the nonsense I heard the other day on WCOJ. And, I'm willing to bet he'd even work for free as long as he didn't have to buy his time. It's a win-win scenario.

Keep in mind both shows are awful, in my opinion. But free "awful" is better than paid-for "awful" any day.

Why talk about small, local radio stations? Because that's where "real radio" (whatever the hell that is) is happening these days...at some stations. It died in Philly quite a while back, probably when WWDB dumped their talk format. And if I hear Freebird on WMGK one more time...

On a positive note, WCHE in West Chester has become quite a little gem. Fine morning show and great rock the rest of the day.

What the hell is that affect he puts on his voice?

And is that an SM 58 used as the main studio mic? Oy...

Great point.

FM radio in Philly has become stale, and people are looking for anything different. Thats how I stumbled onto WCHE.

Just trying to find something to grab thier attention for a few hours rather than listen to the same 15 songs over and over...
