WCRB to flip to rock

nd2023

Banned
Classical 99.5 will be no more in a few weeks. Nassau is planning to flip it to alternative rock. The WPLY call letters have been transferred to 99.5, after being parked on 96.3 in NH since Y100 in Philly flipped to hip hop.
Classical music can still be heard in Boston on WHRB.

Right, because there's such a hole in the marketplace for it! That would be brilliant. After all, no one in Boston has considered doing alternative rock! ::)

If you really wanted to do a good April fool's joke, you should have had Nassau flipping WCRB to urban/AC! Something tells me that the folks at Nassau corporate hq would think that Madonna and is "urban" music!! ;D

No joke.

The best Classical music in the market can be heard on from 9am to 4pm weekdays on 89.7 WGBH.

Well gang...it's April 1st...so we should have expected at least one APRIL FOOLS FORMAT CHANGE?

So what's the next format change: "Punk Country?" ;D

I can hear the lyrics now: "I wanna whip your cow, come on and show me how?" :p

An April Fool's joke maybe, but perhaps Nassau cannot keep up the farce that is WCRB. According to bostonradiowatch.com, WCRB's revenues for 2007 fell sharply to $4.75-million. Its "power ratio" is an anemic .32 (a ratio of revenue vs. ratings and market rank; in other words, advertisers aren't impressed with WCRB's 12-and-over rating being higher than WBCN's for example, because 'BCN reaches people who may drink Johnnie Walker scotch, while WCRB reaches people who USE walkers).

Yes, there is a void for alternative rock in Boston. After waking up Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" on my alarm clock radio set to WFNX, I've given up on that station's ability to play alternative rock.

Yeah, because one of the best alternative stations in the country would play Bon Jovi seriously. It was OBVIOUSLY a joke.

They also played Lita Ford, Slaughter, Great White, GNR, and White Lion. April Fools all around

And in the PPM world...it might've been the biggest cume/tsl day in their history.

Wait until we find out people really dig that stuff still...the laughter will be earthshaking.

If FNX played that stuff on a regular basis, I'd listen. For as cheesy as some of that hair band music was, at least it's not forgettable like a majority of today's Alternative is, IMHO.

Honestly, as unoriginal as Nassau's programming is, it wouldn't shock me if they flipped WCRB to either "the new 99.5 FRANK FM" or "99.5 THE HAWK" - both of which would be canned iterations of classic rock/hits. They seem to have no problem programming multiple stations with rock-based formats that step all over each other in Maine and New Hampshire, so why would it be a problem for them in Boston?

A cynical point of view - yes. But, it is also a prognostication based on past performance.

Fair point about April Fool's Day. But I ask you this: what makes you think WFNX plays all that much alternative when it's not April Fools Day? The playlist is clearly heavy on 90's big label rock bands. The exceptions would be the lunch hour and the speciality shows. Sorry, but I've heard Peter Gabriels' "Salisbury Hill" one too many times on WFNX to consider it a serious alternative station anymore. I can hear the same songs on Mix 98.5.

WFNX does have a history as once being one of the best alternative stations in the country. Keyword is history. Obviously that history is quite strong and legendary, as people still associate FNX with edgy rock. And it's association with the Boston Phoenix newspaper, which is edgy, helps to perpetuate that image. But a newcomer to the area with no knowledge of that history and listening to the station in 2008 would probably regard it simply as a regular rock station.

My parents listened to WCRB, back when it was on 1330 AM and 102.5 FM.

I can vaguely remember one night back in 1964, at the height of Beatlemania, for some reason WCRB threw on "A Hard Day's Night", which was a new Top 40 hit then. The announcer said, "That was a Lennon-McCartney composition..."

Eli...

Do you remember a program that aired on WCRB called Table at Pops? It aired weeknights (and possibly weekends) from 7-8pm and featured recordings by Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops Orchestra.

What you've described in your last post certainly sounds like TABLE AT POPS? The announcer of the program had a tendency to formalize everything The Boston Pops performed....from Bach to The Beatles! ;D
