WCRN Morning Show has a new addition

Maybe WCRiNsider (that is, if he is still there) can answer this but there was a new guy with Peter Blute this morning along with Hank Stolz still doing the news. I did not catch his name but he seems to be the ideological opposite of Peter. In the brief time I listened I have to admit the show was more entertaining than it has been in a long time.

Of course, nothing updated on their website yet. When you still have the wrong studio telephone number on the main page, they certainly can’t be expected to promote the new guy on their weekday schedule.

With all due respect I believe you’re insane. WCRN can hardly keep their lights on (have you noticed their not running at 50,000 watts anymore… WTAG comes in much stronger east and west of the city). There is no way they have the funds to bring anyone new on the air.

With all due respect to you radioman1818, I was not dreaming about hearing someone new with Peter and Hank. And I have not noticed any signal deficiencies during my drive to work in the morning. I travel east and then southeast to Franklin.

I live in Arlington and I have been wondering whether WCRN might be running at less than full power--but I have not gathered enough data to be sure. Signal strength depends strongly on the orientation of my radio and I have not gone to the trouble of observing the signal strength at different orientations.

I haven't listened to them lately but during the summer while visiting friends on the lake in
Webster, I had trouble getting a clean signal to listen to the Red Sox. So, maybe they've
been cut back for a while. Not being familiar with the technical side of the business, how
much of their power would they have to cut back on to realize some significant savings in
energy costs?

They'd probably have to cut back by 10,000 watts to save much of anything worthwhile on the electric bill but you wouldn't notice much of a difference. I don't think you'd notice much difference till they were running 15KW or more UNDER their licensed power.

Well they are a 50000wt station, but for the past several weeks TAG (5000wts) comes in much better west, south, and east of the city of Worcester.

WCRiNsider …. Do you know if they cut back to 15 or 30k watts?

They risk serious fines if they do that. Radio stations are allowed to run 90-105% of their licensed power. Cutting back to save a few bucks on electricity without an STA can lead to a visit from the Cookie company and they won't be in a good mood.

Now, I CAN'T tell you that we are operating at less than 50,000 watts... but I CAN tell you that the engineers have been tinkering an awful lot in here lately both at studio and at the transmitter site. Revenues are down and Electricity is expensive. But we have been getting calls about horrible coverage and our engineers are telling us to say it has to do with atmospheric conditions - and not that we are broadcasting less watts.

The guy who was on with Blute was Rich Teeter. He got chopped from WRKO with all the others last month. He was Finneran's producer and would go on air during the show. He was with Dennis and Callahan for a few years. And worked with Blute and Ozone before that. He is on one day a week.

Not sure,I think Thursdays, but you never can be too sure with CRN.
