WCRN seems to be reimaging

I have noticed recently that WCRN-AM 830 started using News & Talk in many of their liners and is focusing more on Worcester in their imaging. “Your news, your talk, your radio, Worcester’s radio is WCRN” or something similar to that has been running throughout the day. The only real mention of Boston anymore is in their top of the hour ID. They still use “True Talk” in some of their show promos but have definitely downplayed it.

They have also added a CBS news update at the bottom of the hour during the Peter Blute show. Could a programming tweak be coming too?

Sounds like 830 is trying to take things in a more locally oriented direction. Not sure how that's going to work out, but I guess we'll see in due course.

Given WCRN's huge footprint, I've always wondered if perhaps they should be going in the complete opposite direction, and basically try to become a regional New England equivilent of a domestic short-wave station.....essentially becoming a 50,000 watt "billboard" for anyone who wants to pay to play.

Yes.....sort of like these folks:

The signal inside of 128 doesn't cut it--especially in the area northwest of Boston where mixing products of 1510 and 680 (1510 - 680 = 830) make reception even more difficult than it otherwise would be. In addition, at this distance (40 miles or more in much of the area within 128), phasing between skywave and groundwave further degrades the signal (a problem even at midday on many days). The fact is that WCRN needs to focus on Worcester (city AND county) and MetroWest, where the signal ranges from outstanding to very good both day and night.

Top-loading those four towers (via the guy wires) to increase their electrical height might marginally improve the phasing situation, even if the increased efficiency meant having to reduce the power slightly to avoid overlap with WEEI. However, if the power had to be reduced to, say, 44 kW, even though there could be some actual increase in coverage, the marquee value of 50,000 watts on the letterhead would be lost. And then there would be the engineering cost of proofing the top-loaded antenna system.

WCRN's signal is horrific in parts of Spencer (1 town West of their towers in Leicester) when they are in the night pattern. Phasing makes it pretty much listenable.

Same old crappy conservative talk which could be heard on any other station. Why should anyone who is not a rabid conservative and is outside of their immediate area bother listening?
