WCRS. Greenwood

Anybody out there know the status of WCRS-AM 1450.. It has dropped off radio locator.. I got my first paycheck there too many years ago to count .. I hope it hasn't gone dark.. :-\

Is it on the block? Or is it in any type of receivership? I would think someone could make a go of it with 94.1.

Kilowatts, you beat me to it!

Jeff had gotten a CP to move it slightly closer to Columbia, but with WWNQ and now WIGL at Winnsboro, I doubt that is going to happen, not that the move would have made much difference or increased the covered pop.

Sorry about that!

Actually, I had no clue until a few minutes before I posted the message. I just happened to look at my daily e-mail from Taylor On Radio.Info which had a little story about the purchase. I then looked on the FCC database which shows an application accepted for filing on 02/05/2010 to assign the license to RTN.

Same here. It will be interesting to see if RTN tries to move it closer to GSP.

I don't know RTN's plan but I do know that 94.1 can't move any where. It's totally hemmed in by other stations. My guess is RTN wanted the signal to fill in that area between Greenville and Augusta. Nearly 70,000 people live in Greenwood County alone and both the Greenville and Augusta signals can be heard on good car radios but don't get inside buildings in Greenwood.

WCRS along with the Cross Hill FM were reported silent to the FCC in July 2009. Hopefully WCRS will return to the air prior to that date in 2010 and avoid having its licensed cancelled. It's the oldest small market radio station in South Carolina going on the air September 1, 1941 with studios/transmitter on the campus of Lander University. Offices downtown in the Greer building, one of the two "skycrapers" downtown Greenwood. A very interesting history of Greenwood radio can be found at the Greenwood County Library. When WCRS went on the air, the Greenwood Index Journal newspaper did a special section in their paper on the start up of the station. They sold ads saluting the new station. This was somewhat unusual in that the newspaper and radio station were not commonly owned.

On paper, Greenwood would appear to be a great place to operate radio stations but it's never been a good radio market. WCRS was never aggressively programmed or sold back in the early days of radio and every operator there since the original operators of the stations have struggled financially. When I think of Greenwood as a radio market I think Winston Churchill's quote on Russia could apply here...It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. We were able to move the 96.7 FM channel to the Greenville market and sell it back when you could get good prices...that was our exit plan if things didn't go as we hoped. They didn't. I remember how disheartening it was for our AM only in Union, SC , a town a third the size of Greenwood and with far fewer amenities, would generate more revenue and profit that the top AM/FM in Greenwood did.

Art,

I remember you tried to make a go of it down there. Greenwood is a very strange market. You would think since it still serves somewhat as an "axis" for the smaller towns around it, there could be some potential. I spent my "formative" years in radio at the rectangular brick building out on East Durst with the tower out back. I guess you always have a soft spot for your first. That was when the late Charlie Sparks (what a name for enginner) kept the place in tip top technical shape complete with fully functioning backup transmitters from both 1450 and 96.7.

I was once told there I would never make it in radio, but here I am -- some 25 years later still getting a paycheck from the biz.

Exactly how many formats have been on 94.1 throughout the years? I know Country, Top 40, Standards (briefly in 2007 summer), then the "Your" thing. Would RTN operate it as its own station, or simulcast WAFJ or WLFJ/His Radio?

The only station I've ever thought sounded decent in Greenwood was 103.5. They have a decent format and sound good with the local part and the satellite part. Their signal is pretty good too.

Art,
Thanks for the history lesson! That was some really good info. I had no idea the station went back that far.

RTN is planning to use it repeat WLFJ. They had a decent signal but with the over crowding of the non-comm band its really suffered over the years.

Off Topic, but wanted to ask, Art, what is the latest on WLHR? Have they caught anyone?

Ditto. Art is a radio station history book. I always enjoy when he comes on these boards and gives us detailed facts and history about different stations.

94.1 is on the air with the call letters WGFJ. Glad to see it is being put to use.

In addition to WCRS, WROP 1390 (Belton) and WJES 1200 (Saluda) are also silent. Are these all owned by Roper?

If I understand correctly they were all owned by Big Fish Communications which were owned by Angie and Jeff Roper, a real shame that these stations have gone siletn.
