WCRS-LP/WCRX-LP timeshare

This just posted the WCRS-LP Facebook page:

WCRS FM 102.1/ 98.3
"We are hoping Today will be the day that WCRS 102.1/98.3 FM is back on the air with Unique Community Radio that only our city can do! I'll keep you posted here!"

WCRS-LP/WCRX-LP are sharing dead-air at the moment. Both stations share the same transmitter
site so the issue may be at the transmitter site. I'm hearing an Open Carrier on 102.1 with no audio whatsoever, not even station IDs.

Apparently they think it's "ok" to just broadcast an open carrier with no programming... time to either haul a PC to the transmitter site and put on some filler with a LEGAL ID or turn it off until they get the STL fixed!

they probably don't realize it's illegal to do what they are doing!...and that both stations are liable, not just the one that caused the problem.

Well as of the latest I've gotten is we are internet only till friday morning at the earliest. Our internet connection to our transmitter has failed and we need to get in there This damn computer issue is a utter pain in the ass And to explain to know better here as someone in know.

We can't simply go to our site and turn off the carrier as the main one 102.1 FM is on at the City water tower and security is tight there so we have to give notice to the city that we are coming there. It not as easy as you made it out to be or made it.

Frankly it has all been a epic pain in the ass for our station and since we have listeners here, we are really sorry about this. My goal is to STAY OFF the R-I.Com firing line because the only time you seem to get press is when there are issues and problems But I'm sorry about this and please know we are working hard to fix it in a VERY swift way.

Now to tell you also this only dealing with WCRS and our new system we are working the kinks out of and Not WCRX's system which I don't know if they are on our same system or not. There has been some things that i'm not at liberty to discuss at all as WCRX have some issues that belong on a board by themselves. Once we clear this computer and internet issue we should be good to go and sound better for WCRS...... Once this computer quit messing with us.

What automation system are you using now? I heard at one point you played your mp3s out of winamp on a PC.

I understand site security however I thought the FCC requires stations have the ability to remotely turn off their transmitter in situations as this. What happens if some odd reason your transmitter freaks out and starts interfering with public safety frequencies or the aircraft band? [I've heard of it happening to higher power broadcasters elsewhere] Shouldn't you have some method of remotely shutting down if your access to the site is very restricted and you can't easily access?

Not trying to pick on you -- Just honest questions to think about.

Well as a LP if we are pumping that much power that's a major issue. As far as I know we don't have the ability to do what you are saying from the studio. These are questions that will be as and addressed to the tech and engineer boards In quick order.

As to automation, Matt. We do use Radiologik which is mac based right now but we have been looking at switching it out to a better system.

Allstar, count to 10, then relax, especially if you want to engage others on a chat board. Matt's correct, you legally have to have the ability to turn the transmitter on an off, that ability was once in the remote control computer that also ran the audio...but, without internet, I can see why that isn't available... There should have been a failsafe wired in to turn the transmitter off after three hours...it obviously isn't there, and by the book, that's a problem. I will drop Rob an email explaining how to do that...

You must be a relative newbee to the WCRS/X temper tantrums. It's great that in this round at least, the problems are all internal to WCRX, and trust me, they most likely will get a lot worse, than better over the next few weeks or so. You two are obligated to share sites at this point, but not transmitters/audio/ antennas whatever. It seems that the only obligation between the two is not to both be on the air at the exact same time.

have fun sorting that out.

learn to count to 10, or 100 before typing...it's a lot easier on your nerves!

The reason I revived this thread is because I really enjoy listing to some of the show on WCRS-LP.

Jake has a show on WCRS-LP and this is what he has to say about the WCRS/X-LP outage. Note his comments are below the article they wrote on him and his show.

(Actually, due to the station's transmission problems this month, episode #400 won't be airing until Thursday, February 7 at the earliest.)

What is the problem at the WCRS/X-LP transmitter site? It doesn't look very good in the short term.

From what I can gather above.. Their STL is an "internet connection" and their having issues with that.

I indicated February 7 for #400 because tonight #395 was going to get its third crack at being aired, then #397 its second chance tomorrow night, which then meant new #398 and #399 would follow next week (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1), and #400 the Thursday after that. But unfortunately our FMs once again are silent at this time, so now it's going to be February 8 for #400. If we're lucky. Or unlucky, if one doesn't like the thing.

Yet another landmark in my show's history will be reached when the 50th featured artist pairing to grace the "Yesterday's Top Secrets" stage makes its debut. Paul Revere and the Raiders and the Replacements will be heard in that capacity beginning with our 421st episode, on Thursday, May 2. Here have been the first 49 featured artist pairings, in chronological order:

1. the Beatles and Buzzcocks
2. the Beach Boys and Big Dipper
3. the Rolling Stones and the Ramones
4. Sly and the Family Stone and the Sex Pistols
5. Steely Dan and the Smiths
6. the Mamas and the Papas and the Monochrome Set
7. the Doors and the Damned
8. Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Cramps
9. Janis Joplin and the Jesus and Mary Chain
10. the Byrds and the Birthday Party
11. the Carpenters and the Cocteau Twins
12. the Dave Clark Five and the Dead Boys
13. the Everly Brothers and the Embarrassment
14. the Association and A Certain Ratio
15. Jefferson Airplane and Joy Division
16. the Zombies and Xymox
17. Love and Lush
18. the Who and Husker Du
19. the Animals and Adam and the Ants
20. the Supremes and Simple Minds
21. Electric Light Orchestra and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
22. T. Rex and X
23. the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Gibson Brothers
24. Spirit and Scrawl
25. the Lovin' Spoonful and Sonic Youth
26. Steppenwolf and the Stranglers
27. the Searchers and Squeeze
28. Jimi Hendrix and the Jam
29. Scott Walker and Wire
30. the Guess Who and the Gun Club
31. Rising Sons and Throwing Muses
32. the Monkees and Modern English
33. the Turtles and Talking Heads
34. Pink Floyd and the Psychedelic Furs
35. Buffalo Springfield and Blondie
36. the New Christy Minstrels and New Order
37. the New Colony Six and New Order
38. the Kinks and Killing Joke
39. Gerry and the Pacemakers and Echo and the Bunnymen
40. Neil Young and Nirvana
41. Spanky and Our Gang and Siouxsie and the Banshees
42. Van Morrison and Morrissey
43. the Grateful Dead and Great Plains
44. Jan and Dean and Devo
45. Lesley Gore and Gang of Four
46. Eddie Cochran and Elvis Costello
47. the Pretty Things and the Pretenders
48. David Bowie and Bauhaus
49. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Frank Black

The featured artists are heard twice during each hour-long episode, everyone else just once. The record for the longest run is eight weeks (sixteen episodes), which is held by Van Morrison and Morrissey; thirty-two songs by the first were matched up and played with thirty-two songs by the second. That's right, matched up -- each of the two-song pairings from those who are featured each night always shares a common thread that is also always consistent with that entire episode's theme. And here's another interesting statistic: the 420 episodes to date (well, it'll be 420 after this Friday), when divided by the 49 featured artist pairings that will have been heard over the course of them, equals 8.57, which will be the average episode duration of those pairings. Isn't that fascinating?!
I will now entertain your questions, unless everyone is in too much of a state of shock to ask any. I know our industry folks are; I'm afraid that everything I just wrote made all of them choke on their desserts.

Well I think it's pretty sad that nothing has been posted on the Columbus forum for almost two weeks, and so I just thought I'd let everyone know that "Yesterday's Top Secrets" will be celebrating its 5th anniversary this Thursday night on WCRS at 7:00. It'll be our 457th episode on the air and on the internet, after our first one made its debut on October 2, 2008, and our current featured artists are Herman's Hermits and Haircut 100. Yeah, various formats may come and go on some of the other stations in this town, but unlike the people who are in charge of those stations, out here at Secrets Central we know what we're doing -- and we're proud and thrilled to be able to continue to do it, hopefully for at least another five years! Thank you WCRS and Used Kids Records.

Also noticed last week Friday the audio on 102.1 is sounding much better then before. The very poor WCRS-LP audio quality from seven month ago is allmost to the point where you can now really enjoy listening to the music again on "Yesterday's Top Secrets". Much progress had been made over the last two weeks or so. So, thanks to the WCRS-LP staff for working on this issue.
