WCRS partners wanting another FM?

Looking at FCC apps:

COLUMBUS INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY JOURNALISM - 91.9 FM App

These are the same folks who have the license for the 98.3 Translator that is currently airing a poor quality feed of 102.1 FM.

98.3 FM license

(they also appear to be located in the same building as WCRS 102.1's studio's on Broad St.

From The WCRSFM.ORG website:

WCRS FM c/o The Neighborhood Network
Studio Address: 1021 E. Broad St - Rear Carriage House
Columbus, OH. 43205

Please tell me how they should be allowed to have ANOTHER LPFM? .... or would "COLUMBUS INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY JOURNALISM" cut ties with 102.1 WCRS and use 98.3 to rebroadcast their LP if approved at 91.9? all 3 stations can't legally air the same programming per FCC rules....

Looking at Rec's search the dial in Columbus is gonna be crowded by LPFM if their all approved.

(and based on multiple apps for each channel it appears Columbus is in for another situation of time share like with the current 102.1 FM license).

Digging further -- Appears the WCRS-LP Folks (The Neighborhood Network) have applied for a LPFM at 96.7

THE NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORK - 96.7 FM App

Didn't think a Non profit could "own" more than one LPFM also note that there are multiple apps for 96.7 FM thus the frequency could end up with a Time Share situation such as the current WCRS at 102.1.

One LPFM to a customer...but then the guys wanting a small "network" just set up multiple non-profits with different board members.

I don't know much about this, but the fact that you describe 98.3 as a "poor quality feed" tells me that you haven't listened to it recently, xmusicmatt. It's still not perfect, but it sure is a lot better than it used to be. And I vote that the Neighborhood Network's app be granted by the FCC -- the more frequencies we have under our control the better, as God knows that Columbus needs all the good radio it can get, since everything else that's out there right now is so lousy. If it's true that all three signals can't air the same programming at the same time, then one can just adopt a 24-hours-a-day "Yesterday's Top Secrets" format; that would be my suggestion. And we can launch it by airing the show's past 472 episodes over the course of our first 472 hours on the air! And we'll rig it up so that it can show up in the ratings and leave WMNI's and WYTS's 0.2's in its dust.

so far, this one doesn't make a lot of sense, they are asking for an lpfm, at the same site as the translator...also, a whole lot of the groups are inter-related, and other stuff...I don't remember the translator rules of the top of my head, so i will comment later. It looks like less of an mx situation than expected, as most of the Columbus lpfm apps we filed on top of each other, there were some from out of town.

I'll dig a bit later

They can't, although this is an application to set up a 24 hour station on the same tower 102.1 is currently on...(that's going to be fun to watch)..If assigned, (I suspect it will), they would have to diverts interest and ownership in 102.1. (again, depending on how and who does it, not pretty)

glad you said it, not me....

i suspect you will have to learn a new word soon....

Thanks for posting this thread! This saved me the trouble of posting.
We predicted 94.1 would be a frequency of choice for some of the LPFM applicants and that frequencies has been applied for.
Will be curious to see if Saga tries to keep that from happening as they fought the translator on 94.1 FM a couple of years ago.
Saw this article on the web yesterday afternoon and this led me to the Columbus LPFM applications:

LPFM Applications Are Now Online: http://www.radioworld.com/default.aspx?tabid=75&entryid=974#sthash.4XaxhBJQ.dpbs

This link has all the Columbus LPFM applications under "NEW" call letters where you can also see the proposed tower site location map :

Columbus city OH: http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php?latd=39.9898&lond=82.9915

Did you notice a couple of apps. for 91.9? Are they
allowed to apply on 91.9 FM being that it's in the
educational FM band?

The biggest surprise to me is Jake did not submit a LPFM application for Columbus. So now we won't ever get the chance
to hear a 24-hours-a-day "Yesterday's Top Secrets" format with Jake!

Also interesting to note.. One of the Apps for 94.1 is the folks doing the "Jazz" format on WCRX-LP 102.1

SEMM FOUNDATION - 94.1 App

This looks like it will be an interesting ride for all involved -- the WCRS-LP folks wanting 96.7 and the Jazz folks wanting 94.1 plus the folks owning 98.3's translator wanting 91.9.

I will have to say though -- Lot less applications for LPFM's in Columbus compared to some other markets -- Just look at Dallas Texas -- Wow talk about crazy (that's going to be fun to sort out for the FCC)

Oh yeah, there's all sorts of ways it could happen without me owning an LPFM. I'm very happy with the way things are right now with my show on 98.3 and 102.1, but if someone in commercial radio approached me who was interested in trying "Secrets" as a format, I'd definitely be willing to talk with him or her about it.
