WCSH and bias

Channel 6's newsmagazine show "207" apparently has run out of topics, so tonight they did a "best of" of what they called "satellite interviews."

They re-ran Kathleen Shannon asking Dennis Miller, and I quote, "I heard a NASTY rumor that you became a conservative." Miller challenged Shannon numerous times (as he should have) but she tried to side-step this comment.

Granted, "207" is not a "hard news" show, but Shannon IS an anchor on WCSH's news shows. Regardless of your political slant, don't you find this a bit unacceptable for a newsperson who is supposed to be objective?

She never would have got away with that had she worked at Sinclair-owned WGME!

It's just a guess....but perhaps Dennis Miller's "celebrity status" was more of a "end of the year" consideration than the content of Kathleen's interview with him?

Full disclosure: I didn't see the "best o'the satellite" edition of "207." I only winced when I heard the promo with Rob Caldwell announcing, "We never know what we'll get with these satellite interviews."

Actually, we do know exactly what we'll get. We'll get someone who's trying to sell something, and they or their corporate sponsor has bought satellite time to see which local affiliate will bite at free programming. So what was Dennis Miller flakking? I'm hard-pressed to think of anything he would have to offer that would be of interest to an audience tuned in for local news.

As for the bias question, WCSH: Biased? No. Inept? Yes. Dennis Miller established his conservative streak long ago.

I saw this bit on Monday. I thought the NASTY rumor was in regard to him shifting his focus from comedy in favor of politics. Regardless, his response was very unprofessional for someone of his stature. If I was a liberal conspiracy theorist, I would say that his reaction is typical right wing whining about a press who does not buy into the conservative narrow minded thought. But hey, I don't buy into in conspiracy theories.

207 is fluff anyway.

While WCSH should be praised for having a local show on in a time slot when 90% of other stations would offer syndicated fare, the fact of the matter is "207" is just a show where local advertisers shill their wares and NBC pimps their prime time shows with more "Satellite" interviews. Oh, they'll put Bill Green on once in a while just to make it look like a Maine-oriented show, but that's just a smoke-and-mirrors trick to make you think you're watching a Maine newsmagazine.

If Hearst Argyle were smart, they'd put their higher-quality "Chronicle" brand that they use in MA and NH to work on WMTW.
