WCSH/WLBZ cutting newscasts, jobs

According to the TVSpy Watercooler, the hits just keep on coming at the longtime #1 news station in the Portland, ME market. Midday newscasts on Saturdays and Sundays that originated at WCSH are no more (they were simulcast on WLBZ in Bangor.) Seven staffers (none on-air) will lose their jobs (five in Portland, two in Bangor) including a 30-year station veteran. Also, the vacant position of News Director will not be filled, along with five other open slots. Are even more changes coming to One Congress Square? Stay tuned...

The Bangor/Portland connection will probobly get worse.I know they're #1 but I don't watch them, too much time reporting Bangor & Northern Maine.I watch one of the LOCAL Portland stations. This Bangor/Portland thing has to catch up with them eventually. As cheap as Sinclair has been made out to be WGME has much more LOCAL coverage,so doesn't the station everyone loves to hate WMTW.

Too bad...I liked watching WCSH 6's midday news on the weekends while at my beach house in Maine. I, too, though have been more impressed with WGME and even WMTW lately. I guess I'll have to watch NECN for my midday news on the weekends.

Maybe WABI TV5 Bangor will take up the slack on weekends? They just have 6 and 11PM news (when sports permit) on Sat and Sunday..no morning or mid-day news. WVII ABC7 has absolutely NO local news at all on the weekends. Those 6:30PM infomercials provide far more programming in the public interest...
Kinda sad.. And of course, forget about local news on the radio during the weekend...but that's for another board.

I doubt 5 or 7 add any more news. Channel 5 already does 2 1/2 hours in the morning (2 on Channel 5, a half hour at 7am on their CW subchannel), a noon, the usual 90 minutes at 5pm, a 10 on their subchannel and an 11. Their weekend newscasts are all done by the same 2 people (husband and wife-duo on news and sports) and they tape the weather segments often.

I think Channel 7 could add a newscast or 2 (they have the anchors) but I don't think the cash is there.

I never did get the insistence of doing weekend news at noon, when people are not watching tv (for the most part, especially on warm sunny summer afternoons). Back when NBC used to carry the NBA and more sports than they do now, they used to preempt NBC Sports for the weekend noon news.

Ya...I used to just watch WCSH's midday while eating lunch in between going to the beach -- so I see your point, Mainedude.

Oh man, how will I go on without my "Storm Center" music at noon this winter telling me not to go outside and that the bean supper is cancelled?

The cancellation crawls are too many and too much. Just makes me watch the DVD's more.

Sorry if I'm going too far off topic.

I agree with the above 100%. Especially the weather related crawls. Most weather stories are blown so out of proportion.I personally don't watch weather reports anymore, from any station.I've had too many plans ruined by the totally wrong reports.Getting off subject.Sorry

Yep, the crawls are annoying and the hype is insulting.
In New England it snows in the winter and gets hot in the summer.

It's snowing, the local bridge club won't be meeting tonight. DAH
Plus, we don't need someone to tell us to stay home, and if we must travel, be careful.

THANKS! I was planning on going out and speeding down the highway at 90 mph.

Oh, and in the summer, drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunlight.
