WCSH/WLBZ to add 4:30AM newscast

According to a brief item in the business section of today's (Sat. June 36) Bangor Daily News, WCSH and co-owned WLBZ will start their early morning newcasts at 4:30AM in August. Presumably it will all still originate at WCSH in Portland....I'm sure WABI Bangor will follow suit!!!

Wow, does that day come after the 12th of Never? ;)

Meanwhile, it would not surprise me if comeptitors eventually jump onto the 4:30 AM news bandwagon. I am seeing that in many markets: when one station decides to add 4:30 AM news, others follow. So it is not a matter of if WABI does so, it is when.

give them 6 months!

I could see WABI adding a 4:30 half hour of news, which combined with a half hour of news on their CW subchannel that would be 3 hours of total news in the morning in the 155th largest TV market. (The other major affiliate in Bangor would never add news that early, ABC affil WVII has a 6pm and a prerecorded 11pm and a prerecorded 10pm on their Fox station)

In Portland, WGME will probably add a 4:30 eventually but WMTW won't because they don't even have a 5pm newscast.

I could see WMTW adding a 4:30AM weekday newscast since mornings is the main thrust of their efforts under Hearst. Don't forget that they do a full three-hour newscast on weekend mornings, double what Channels 2/6 do overall, plus their weekday morning news team features TWO meteorologists. WGME has started its weekday early news at 4:55AM for years. I imagine they could add another 25 minutes, but their resources are pretty stretched already with the new 7A-9A show on FOX. Will 8 or 13 let 2/6 experiment and jump in if they find success, or will they fire a preemptive strike? In the end, it probably doesn't matter; WMTW was first-to-the-market with a 5PM weekday newscast, and you know how that turned out...
