WCTC - sad

I'm unfortunately not surprised in the latest ratings that WCTC doesn't show at all in the ratings. It was such a heritage station in the area, "serving all of Central Jersey from New Brunswick." There were super hyper local.

They've been on a downward slide for a long time. This kind of radio worked when there was no competition. Once people had NJ101.5 or even WMGQ, they went there. There used to be a lot of "hyper-local" AM stations in the area, like WERA and WBRW. All gone.

The two things keeping people tuned to WCTC were Jack Ellery doing the morning show and Bruce Johnson doing play-by-play of Rutgers sports. When both of them left the station a few years ago, so did their ratings.

WCTC has a construction permit to build an FM translator on 93.5 MHz. Time will tell if it will be used to help bolster the current format, or to launch a new one.

One would guess that they would keep the current format in tact which is cheaply run. They did music several years back and then resurrected the talk format after that didn't move the audience gauge. Wouldn't make sense to add insult to injury and pay music royalties to air a jockless format. Maybe the translator will add value for a potential sale down the road.

Keep in mind that WCTC was one of the original Greater Media stations, and was recently bought by Beasley. They own several AMs including oldies WMTR in Morristown. With only a thousand watts, this station will greatly benefit from a translator.

Nothing like taking the little talk audience you had, scaring them away with a new format, and then wondering why they don't come back when you change back again
