Natalie Jacobsen read a breaking news story on the 6 PM News tonight regarding the evacuation of a Weymouth, Massachusetts nursing home. While she is reading the copy they are showing a video of a building going up in flames.

The truth of the story was the Weymouth nursing home was evacuated because it received a threatening letter. Still, it you missed the top of the story a viewer or worse yet a relative of a resident at that facility would have thought it had gone up in flames.

No, it was just WCVB Channel 5's newscast going up in flames.

Hi everyone:

I was watching WHDH 7 Online earlier tonight and they had a report of one person dying during the evacuation and an explosion somewhere in the boiler room.

They also said the building would be closed for safety reasons while repairs are made.

Like I said, I was watching 7's LIVE COVERAGE via the Internet (Not that I'm a Bostonian mind you :) ) and I didn't see any flames (Trust me, you can see pictures of something on fire in a video being played via Windows Media. Microsoft isn't THAT bad :) ).

I didn't hear anything about a threatening letter. That's not what WHDH reported. Perhaps someone who watched another source (such as WBZ) could confirm or deny the above?

Though if there was an explosion in the boiler room (as was reported by WHDH 7), wouldn't that have been enough to level the building (or at least turn into the next Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building)? One would think it would...

That's nothing, check this out...

Classic case of having the wrong video, or having it mislabeled. The kind of thing I expect to see out here in West Texas, but not big market Beantown. I used to see it happen all the time. One time, we had a sports guy who wouldn't label his tapes before he gave them to the tape op!

I have funnier story...
Out here, they read a story that came down on the AP about the detroit auto show, comlete with video. So the anchor (who was clueless) reads the news script off the telelprompt, which talked about the new Geeley (sp) that Chinese car that debuted. Meanwhile, the video was showing different pictures, including the new Dodge Challenger, which is a ponycar similar to the Mustang. So he reads the script, looks at the monitor (obviously), and ad libs:

"The Chinese are entering the auto market in Detroit with a new car they plan to sell under $10,000. And it resembles a Mustang."

Yes, I swear this happened!

Those are two different stories. The fire or fires were in Reading and the nursing home is in Weymouth. I don't expect anything more from Channel - If It Bleeds It Leads - 7 TABLOID WHDH, but I do expect more from WCVB Channel 5. It seems some idiot in the newsroom at Channel 5 ran the fire tape of the Reading fire behind Natalie Jacobsen reading the "breaking news" story of the evacuation of the Weymouth nursing home due to a threatening letter not a fire. Natalie should have said something but maybe at this very late stage in her broadcasting career she just 'frankly,doesn't give a damn

Honestly, Natalie probably had NO idea what was going on with the video.

Something like that happened on a teaser for the noon news in Boston. They were reading about cures for migranes and cut to a video of a mother beating her daughter in a van that a mall security camera caught. When they cut back to the reporter her face was beat red and they just faded to black. Although the video wasn't funny you couldn't help but laugh.

We Are WCVB CHANNEL 5 We Don't Make Mistakes - Therefore NO Correction or Clarification Is Necessary....

When contacted regarding the news gaff WCVB's Newsroom would not acknowledge the mistake and therefore will NOT issue a correction or clarification.

Yeah they are a bit tabloidish. Sister WSVN in Miami is much the same way if you've ever watched them online (or on the tube for that matter).

Here in Denver, we could use such a news operation as ALL the other FIVE are like "clones" of one another. When FOX O&O KDVR 31 started doing news, I thought they were gonna be the ones to shake things up around here. But instead, they're simply falling right in line.

Hey, at least they didn't ad lib. That's our biggiest problem out here. There's one stations (which I used to work for), where the Anchors (who are clueless, and probably just woke up an our before going on the air), read AP off the script, and then make these rediculous ad libs that prove they know NOTHING about what they just read. I'm getting to the point where I might actually keep a tally soon!

One anchor actually read the Diomand Pet Food story (that's been in the AP for over a week) on Monday, as if it just happened. I was like, "my gawd, are you even paying attention to the news?" Makes me want to throw my hiking boots at the set!
