WCVB Note to Cable Subscribers

BOSTON -- NOTICE TO CABLE SUBSCRIBERS:
WCVB-TV Channel 5’s parent company, Hearst Television, is currently negotiating a renewal of its carriage agreement with various cable operators, including Charter, Metrocast, RCN, Shrewsbury Electric and Cable, Beld/Braintree Electric, Norwood Light Broadband, Argent Communications and Southern Vermont Cable.
If negotiations are not successfully concluded before December 31, 2011, you may not be able to view WCVB on your local cable system, but you will be able to receive WCVB over the air and from other cable and satellite providers.
We will post updates on our discussions with these cable operators on TheBostonChannel.com.

I wonder why Comcast and Verizon FiOS aren't on that list, but I'm glad.
 
I am beginning to think in this day and age Hearst and others are pulling this crap at their own peril, with 500 or so choices available few viewers give really
give a s--t about ABC-NBC or CBS programming other than the sports fanatics. With major games on ESPN and other cable outlets the majority of viewers
may start to say who cares, the may become irrelevent. I like WCVB-TV news but.......if they are going to keep sticking it to me with absurd cable bill demands WBZ or what ever news works for me.
 
Don't complain to the broadcasters; complain to the NFL. The broadcast networks and their affiliates are in the same boat as the cable channels, bidding against each other for expensive football rights, and ESPN takes about $5.00 of your cable money per month whether you watch it or not. You are in the distinct minority when it comes to not caring about sports; the reality is that the NFL is about the only thing that gets people juiced about watching broadcast television these days. The NFL Sunday Night game is the #2 show on television, and the only Top 30 show on NBC. The NFL got 50% increases in the most recent renewal, so expect more of these battles as time goes on.
 
My local cable company MetroCast announced on their website that they will be dropping WCVB due to Retransmission Consent negotiations. At least WBZ and WHDH haven't been affected yet. I hope Southern Maine doesn't lose all the Boston channels. I enjoy seeing the news for Boston and Portland. Now MetroCast New Hampshire branch is losing WMTW and WNEU.
 
Just wondering, will WMUR be affected by this as well, since it's a sister station to WCVB. I'm guessing this mostly affects NH viewers, since most of these providers I've never even heard of, and I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if they already had an ABC affiliate.

No WMUR won't be affected at least with MetroCast because it has never been carried by MetroCast in Maine and its a local ABC affiliate in New Hampshire.
 
On 2/1/2012 MetroCast Sanford area dropped WCVB 5 and we officially only have 1 ABC affiliate now. I didn't think much of it until tonight when I tuned to channel 8, WMTW, to watch Shark Tank and found it had been preempted for a WMTW Patriots Special and a ticker at the bottom said Shark Tank will air at 2:00am tomorrow. I guess I'll have to watch it on abc.com tomorrow. I miss having 2 ABC affiliates since WCVB is airing Shark Tank according to their schedule and I should be able to watch it. At least I still have 2 NBC and 2 CBS for the time being. Does anyone know if this contract dispute with Hearst will be settled eventually and WCVB restored?

Maybe not in your area. I think this dispute only affected areas that have another ABC affiliate besides WCVB. I wouldn't be surprised if certain areas in NH only got WMUR from now on, since their schedules are practically identical and you don't need 2 of the same station.
 
I don't know why, but channel 9 runs ABC's "This Week" Sundays at noon, rather than 10:00 am which is when WCVB runs it.
