It's not moving much. They are adding 50% more height, but the coverage looks to be about the same. Wonder why they are going to the trouble?
______________

because in the real word, their signal will improve, probably at least 30%..

in fm, height is everything. isn't there another station heading near that same site??

I know height is more important than power. Just seems like a lot of trouble for such a small gain IMHO. I guess we'll see how it affects the coverage soon.
______________

Doesnt CVCO Inc, WCVO's Parent company own the property their studios and tower are on now? I assume if their moving towers, the old one will come down more than likely and they will move studios too and who knows? maybe sell that property, I assume where they are currently located is prime target for New Albany Realestate with all those big big expensive houses that have poped up over the years surrounding their property.

My best guess, and this is just a pure guess, would be, move tower to a cheaper piece of land and sell that land their own now (if they do indeed own it) Consdiering its surrounded by houses now already, I assume someone would like to get their hands on it and throw up a few more houses.

The site of their new tower is very near the new site for WSFJ-TV. Frankly, I'm suprised that it has taken the broadcast community all this time to realize that area is some of the highest terrain in Central Ohio. Take a look at the 60 dBu contour for WCVO's current location, then look at the plot for their new site. Even with the ERP reduction, they will be picking up quite a bit of additional coverage.

As for the property value of their current location, rumors have floated around for years that there were forces at work to get CVCO to relocate because of the potential real estate value of their property. This became especially significant after Wexner moved out there and all of the white fences started popping up.

The orginization I work for used to have a communications tower very close to Wexner's house and the WCVO tower. The story at the time was that Les didn't want a radio tower to spoin his "view" so he arranged to get us a tower site further east on 161 in exchange for the old site that "marred his view".

If memory serves, I read somewhere that Wexner also had an aesthetic objection to a big cross that was by the studio. I haven't been by there in awhile, so I don't know if it's still there. Since I can't recall the source of this report, I don't know how accurate it was.
______________

And I hate white fences. I guess money talks when you're a crybaby.
______________

I disagree on the signal being improved.
I looked at the FCC contours and they are going to lose some coverage in the southwest part of Franklin County (where there are lots of people) and gaining coverage in Licking County (which has almost no people).
It doesn't make business sense to me to reduce your signal in a heavily populated area. Perhaps they know something I don't.

wait and see...it will be lots better.

Class A is Class A no matter how high you go. The FCC would not allow a class A to go further than what the rules call for. The new lower power may actually result in a slightly lower signal field strength in the blanketed area of downtown which would mean all the big stations would cause more interference to the signal in that area. 98.9 used to be at 700+ feet at 900 watts but when Jacor or whomever purchased them, they modified it to 2600 watts at 505 feet and the signal improved drastically downtown (because it could overpower the interference in receivers). In fact, in southern Delaware county, there were substantial signal fades with the old very high, lower power signal.
Once a class A stick goes above 300 feet, the FCC lowers the power to maintain the same 16 km city grade signal distance.
Having said all that, I have always thought they "get out" pretty good for a class A from their current transmitting site. Why tinker?
