WCWG Stays At The Strip Club

I got word from a friend of mine at Oak Hollow Mall that Pappas has pulled the plug on a WCWG-TV move to the mall. This is the third time the Pappas station has promised staff they were moving from behind Harpers Topless Carwash and Adult Gentleman's Club. It really doesn't matter as there are only 3 employees there who have been there long enough to remember the earlier broken promises. (The new GM at WCWG has replaced or run-off nearly the entire staff in less than a year - not just sales staff; but operations and other behind the scene staff that rarely turn-over on management changes.)

It's unfortunate because at one time WCWG was a top performer for Pappas and the WB Network. With a weak ABC affiliate in the market, the station was competitive. However, company politics and the lack of anyone with Top-50 Market experience in corporate management resulted in removal of a top performing General Manager.

;D What a agreat show it would be if they built a news set at the Harpers Car Wash.. Man ..Talk about some ratings!

Mr. Pappas prefers that his stations have news; but based on the performance of their "flagship" station's coverage of the Omaha mall shooting, a web cam at the Car Wash would generate more viewers.

During Fox News' coverage of the Omaha Mall shooting, the Pappas television station was unable to provide coverage or reports to the network for nearly 3 hours. Fox News had to depend upon the NBC affiliate's feeds and local radio reporters. Once the station finally got a report for a live shot for Fox News, Shepard Smith blew the reporter off because the content was hours old. Later, the station failed to be in place for the police press conference, causing Fox News to miss most of that live shot.

We are spoiled in Greensboro with such a strong FOX affiliate.

I don't understand? I was by Oak Hollow yesterday and they have quite a few show windows painted with WCWG Logos and stuff in the store front buildings. Did they just do that for looks.. Looks like they are moving in to me?

Those have been in the windows since late 2006. I suspect that they will come down very soon. The problem is that the Mall has several large empty spaces, making it look like new tenants are coming helps the morale.

The folks at the Mall bent over backwards for Pappas; but unfortunately, the numbers just did not work out. WCWG is currently paying a moderately high rent because they don't have a lease. I found several alternative locations that were even cheaper that their current location before I was replaced; but they are so afraid to sign any leases that I wouldn't be surprised if they never move.

It's sad because it indicates the uncertainty of some broadcasters in the shadow of the analog turn off in 13 months.

;D If I had anything to say about it (Which, I may eventually) they would pick up all their stuff and move their ass back to Lexington, their city of license) They are due for a challenge to serving the "public interest" in which they do nothing! Any other thoughts on Broadcasters putting stations on the air in communities, leaving them a few years and moving out?

So Ape ... I heard that Miss Leslie Nash is leaving the Bob and Leslie show .... are you by any chance heading back to Lexington ... giving you a much needed PUBLIC soapbox ?????

So, Ape- if community of license support is sooo important, wonder why Gig's busting his butt (and bank account) trying to move the FM to Charlotte? If Lexington can't support a AM\FM operation, why on earth would you think it could support a UHF TV?

If Lexington is their city of license, why don't they show that in their hourly legal ID?
And why is their audio so crappy on some shows?

Hmmmmm, I must ponder the answers to so many questions.. Engineer, I can't answer the audio problem, but they are licensed Lexington, put on the air by William Register and his dog and pony show and used to be in a metal building on Business 85 at the Toy Chest across from the Massage Parlor. Sheriff Hege closed the massage parlor, so I guess that's why they had to move to Harpers Necckid Car Wash.. Hahahahah! BIG APE!

The audio problem is a result of saving money by not twin-casting. Instead of maintaining a separate Analog Feed (as everyone else did), WCWG was "encouraged" to go 100% digital out of the studio. There's no Audio Processing on the feed because the station is still analog - using slowing dying Panasonic MII videotape. Nearly $700,00.00 in equipment sat in storage to help with the digital transition - purchased by the Corporate VP of Engineering - only problem was it's environmental requirements (HVAC) could not be met at the Carwash without substantial renovations - which Pappas apparently could not afford.

We had a plan to do it right, but unfortunately, the Corporate Staff believed they could do it better. In thinking about my experiences, I have realized that the company is run to be bottom feeders.

I checked out that Pappas TV website there and left it on a window in the background.

Then a FOX News Channel story on OJ's canceled book came up. The Dow in the ticker was in the 12,300s.
I can't imagine how that played into all the press releases and bios on the front page, and it didn't seem interesting enough to really find out why.....

::) I don't remember bringing Gig up in this show..I'm the one that made the statement about the TV station not serving it's city of license..I'm the one with interest in this..#2..The Big APE would never play 2nd fiddle to anyone (not knocking Q-94..woops 94.1 Oldies or whatever? as I mentioned in a previous post, they are my relatives and I have nothing bad to say in that arena)..However, Pappas is a different story! Does anyone know if there is any connection to Nick Pappas and the boys from Winston Salem?..Ya Know Pappas owned WAIR and the FM in the day . Dubba Dan, Do you work there? Or are you a former employee? Just curious how all this came up.

Ape: I think you were thinking of Nick Patella. He owned Wair and Z93. His brother owns Vincenzos Italian Restaurant on Robinhood rd.

As far as Don and Ch 20 goes: Don did work there and was relieved of his duties. Search the board, he did post about this, not far back.

;D You are exactly right..it was Patilla..But didn't Sam Pappas own Tavern on the Green and several other WS Locations??

Yup, I was an 8 Year Employee. I won $100,000 in Equipment at the 2004 NAB Show (Snell & Wilcox Digital Make-Over). I pointed out where they could save money. I saved them a few thousand in telephone expenses. I found better ways of doing things. Unfortunately, I was a direct hire by a now-retired Pappas VP. The new GM was not hired by Mr. Pappas; but the wife (head-hunter) of a new Pappas VP. She gets finder fees for the "new" employment opportunities her husband created. She racked up nearly 100G's in Greensboro alone.

Thinking back, I don't think there are many if any managers in the entire company once this husband/wife tag-team came to power.

On cost savings, I could have saved them $100,000 in the DTV install and gotten it done before the deadline, not months later. I could have had them in Full-HD before the CW Launch within budget and move-ready (with mirrored systems); but unfortunately the Tag-Team wanted it done their way.

Personnally, I think Mr. Pappas is a great guy, with lots of great ideas that have been mis-managed or poorly executed. He had an ideas that were revolutionary at the time that have made others billions of dollars. He could have been part of that ride had he the right people working for him. Unfortunately, those people have been run off and the time to act has long since past.

Ape ... it is Village Tavern. TOG is in Central Park! Are you slowly losing it? :~)

Sorry, Don't know how long you've been around WS, But Pappas owned Tavern on the Green in Winston along with another one (the name escapes me) at the bottom of the Thruway Mall..I've got 1970 Airchecks from WTOB with TOG on them!

Right, it was a huge salad bar.
