I've been spending a fair bit of time listening to WCYY and wondered what others thought of the station. Things I like:

1. their support for local bands - they're definitely supportive and involved in the Portland scene. A lot of stations only give lip service to local music.

2. Spinout - always an interesting listen.

What I don't get is that they play some great classic alternative and current cuts. I've heard vintage Replacements and REM during I-Drive CYY. Their currents are on target with things like Foster The People, Death Cab for Cutie, Danger Mouse feat. Jack White, Black Keys, Beastie Boys, Airborne Toxic Event, even the new Decemberists.

Yet it seems CYY also has a fascination with active rockers like Seether, Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold, and a lot of Korn tracks.

I'm not trying to be an alternative purist here. But I'm trying to figure out why it's advantageous to do this mix in a fairly hip market like Portland that has The Bone also generously playlisting these tracks. If CYY is doing the local stuff, airing shows like Spinout in evening primetime, and mixing in classic alternative from bands like Depeche Mode and the Cure, then why not evolve the mix to more of an FNX style classic and now alt rocker and ditch the active rock?
