WDAE now on FM

Looks like The Fan has some competition on the FM dial now ... 620 WDAE is now broadcasting on stereo at 95.3 FM.

Does anyone know how the signal does in Brandon? I have a good friend of mine that lives there and I visit him sometimes. I cannot use coverage maps because I'm blind. Thanks a lot guys.

Had them on in my car here in New Port Richey today. Just some "picket fencing" however, not bad signal.

I'm also in New Port Richey but it's not listenable for me, as co-channel WXCV in Homosassa is equally strong.

I don't see why it's necessary to have a translator for a 5k AM station that is like a quarter of a mile from said translator. Also, why did WBTP-FM need a translator, isn't it on the same tower? I can't help but feel it's wasteful to put content that is already well served on AM, on an FM translator. WDAE has a MONSTER signal, I don't see how a 250 watt translator up the street is going to hit anyone that AM signal isn't already.

I believe the simple answer is in two parts:

1. Young'uns aren't aware the AM band exists for the most part and WDAE wants to reach them better.
2. 98.7 won't be able to boast about being the only FM sports station in Tampa.

A lot of new cars dont even have AM tuners for their radios. Even some new alarm clock-type radios, the kind you would have on your desk at work, don't always have AM tuners.

IMO, THAT is why they are doing this. Well, that, and 98.7, of course. 98.7 wants to one-up CC by going FM? Fine, CC goes FM to respond, PLUS has the contracts for the Bucs, Rays, and Lightning. Suddenly, CC is FM, CBS didn't steal Deumig, and 98.7 has nothing other than USF to fight back with.

That said, I was driving home from St. Pete, at 275/54th ave, to my house in Brandon (Mango/Seffner area). Comes in great, all the way through, until you start getting into Mango, then it still comes in fine, but you might get some static here and there. Still better than AM though. This is all in a car, I can't speak for the reception inside an office or house.

Too bad CC is just cluttering the FM dial with garbage translators that do nothing but upset the folks on the fringes (because contrary to how it's promoted on air, most listeners don't know the technical aspects of the signals like we do).

Interesting chain of events to make this all happen. Due to the Joy-FM's 91.5/91.7 combo and eventual signal upgrade at 91.5, they no longer needed 95.3 Pinellas Park. I wonder if CC had anything to do with getting them that last bit of money for their purchase of 91.7? ;) OK... so anyway, Reach-FM's 94.5 moves off the Derby Lane WBTP stick and over to Starkey Road and gets Thunder. 95.3 upgrades from a tower near Park and 49th to the old 94.5 antenna on the Gandy Blvd tower and gets WDAE. Both will struggle to cover the market and neither will do anything to affect the ratings of 107.3 or 98.7. There... I said it and that's what I'm sticking with.

Wait ....... 98.7 has ratings? ;)

It's a sign of desperation for WDAE. Don't see it as a competition. Yeap, The Fan has better ratings in some dayparts. Check it out.

Where have you been? Yes, The Fan has ratings and not just ratings, but beating WDAE. It took us all by surprise. Not to mention, have you been to St Pete at Fergs? I was there the other day when The Fan was transmitting LIVE. You should see the area they have set up. AWESOME!! I think it's called The Fan Cave or something like that. Then, I saw WDAE with a little table and tent down the street not even close to where all the action is. Seems the days of WDAE are bye bye and now Tampa Bay is ready for the new guys on the block. You've got to go to Fergs and check it out.

620 has been crushing The Fan consistently since they signed on. I'm sure CBS has been dumping a lot of money into promoting The Fan, but they're still getting their ass kicked by an AM station. ;D

Sports is a slow build. Unless you can see demos like 25-54 men and specific dayparts you can't really make that statement.

Reality is that a startup is eroding what was one of the higher rated sports stations in the country.

I thought this was supposed to be a slam dunk? Everyone says AM is dead after all.

I haven't seen any detailed info, but I think a glance at the 12+ is a pretty good barometer in this situation. The Fan hasn't been able to crack a 1 yet. Play had the plug pulled for pulling 2's.

Cedric.... you know you gotta look at the specific demos and day parts. No question that Duemig is probably carrying WDAE but look at the other day parts, it's closer than you think. 12+ doesn't give a clue in this battle.

620 carries Mohr for the lunch hour, I like him better than Rome but Rome has a larger fanbase, which 98.7 grabbed.... the morning shows are a toss-up.... I wouldn't doubt 98.7 would have took over already if they had the local team contracts.

Gotta agree with Bill Alm on this one. 12+ can obscure more than it reveals when it comes to sports talk. It took years for WDAE to make a dent in 12+, but they were still rocking along for years generating male 18 to 34 numbers that national advertisers were lining up to buy.

Easy answer Cedric, to block the roll-out of LPFM by corporate radio.

Thunder is actually beating 98.7 in some key male demos. Not by a ton of course but beating them with a combined 500 Watts. And we've shaved just enough off the Eagle to Edge up XTB. I'm very happy with the loyal base of listeners I've been interacting with via e-mail and facebook so far for Thunder. Bringing back the perfect album side has been fun and I'm working on developing more features to give the listeners even more selection and interactivity so we'll see over time what happens ;D
