WDAS website: Joe "Butter" Tamburro died today

agreed. butter was truly one of the very last of the golden era of philly soul DJs. and i do mean soul. patty jackson and WDAS FM doing a tremendous job of paying tribute to him today.

Starting listening to Butter on WDAS-AM in the mid-60's. I'll admit, I shed more than one tear when I heard the news from Harvey on WOGL. Switched to WDAS-AM, where they were simulcasting the FM with an all day tribute to Butter and the hits he broke. Bad disease he had. Sorry to lose him so soon. Loved the guy.

I listened to Butterball every Sunday Night when he took over for Harvey Holiday in February of 1985. When he started on Sunday Nights his show was inside the WDAS Studios, and he took listener requests. In April of 1989, is when he went to a remote live dance party show. I have several of his various hits albums: Lover's Only (his rap starts out the album), Time Tunnel Oldies, Heavy Hits, and the double album compilation he did with Jimmy Bishop. We was a great radio personality that will be truly missed.

I've lived in the Boston area all my life, but I'm aware of Butterball's long radio career in Philly.
Our TV Channel 56, then owned by Kaiser Broadcasting, used to carry Hy Lit's TV show for a short while in the late 1960s, and Butterball was always appearing with Hy between acts.
