WDBO promos

Is anyone else a little put off by WDBO's new promos? They have that one that says "when you don't give an BLEEP about weather, we do." Seems like they wouldn't want to suggest that they're talking about things that the audience doesn't care about. Most of the other ones sound pretty amateurish too.

I've noticed on a recent drive to/from Atlanta that WSB airs promos that sound just like the ones on WDBO, down to the copy. (Yes, I realize the announcer is the name, I mean down to the elements in the copy itself.) So this promo could have been some other cluster's creation and just re-used down here.

This promo doesn't sound like it caters to the typical WDBO user though. Thought they were better than that when promoting themselves. Maybe the HD2 exposure to potential FM audience listeners has been going to their heads. :]

I'm not sure the HD2 has gone to thier heads..I think WDBO is attempting to move a few years younger without going over the line..Hve noticed this promo sound on several NT stations around the country, especially those that have been around as long as DBO has...

I could understand the "appeal to a younger crowd" argument if the rest of the promos were even remotely in the same ballpark. But most of them are hilariously inept attempts to sound high-brow, like the one I heard the other day where they go through a list of weather conditions, and then the announcer says "weather is weather....and it is so stated that WDBO is your weather station."

Even if these are coming from the national people, whoever is actually writing them sounds like they never got out of high school creative writing class. And the ones that try to be "young" are just really, really bad attempts at humor.

You monday morning quarterback radio hacks. I have heard this kind of talk for quite some time in the radio biz and it comes from people that have never been in the industry, or from hacks that just couldn't cut it in the biz. If it is good enough for stations like WSB [Atlanta] and WDBO [Orlando], they know what they are doing. Look at what kind of powerhouse N/T stations they are in their respected markets. You think you can do better? Here is what you should do radio guru.

First write and produce the copy, and remember news talk promos are 10, 15, 30 & 60 seconds long [make sure it's exact every time]. Now, with the topics of ONLY talk, news, traffic, weather, come up with your original ideas. Go ahead, pack an original idea into a 10 second promo, with only the topics of talk, news, traffic and weather. Also, go ahead and do that for hundreds and hundreds of promos and list them here. We will all come back and go over your work. It will be fun. I will be waiting along with many others to see what skills you have.

Frankly WDBO's/WSB's marketing/creative strategy was perfect with this promo because you are thinking about it and talking about it. Props to the WDBO/WSB guy/gal that put this together. I will side with the professionals any day over some radio wannabe monday morning quarterback hack. Sorry you are not smart enough to understand the concept, and yes, I want fries with my order!

We have diverse teams that converse all different ways. I have seemed to ruffle some feathers here for having an opinion that differs from theirs. Again, hacks that probably have never seen the inside of a single radio station!

I would point out that just because it's hard to write a good promo doesn't excuse the production of bad promos.

Tone aside, we are back to square one here. radiolite was presented with an option to write/produce better promos, that option was not taken. Anybody can talk negativity about anything, but presented with the option of “ok ,you do better” they will not take this option for understandable reasons, they can't do better. I have read many comments in threads like this in many markets and going back to square one, radiolite's knowledge on this topic is about as useless as this thread and it's a waist of my time commenting anymore. radiolite is just another monday morning quarterback hack!

First of all, you used a homonym of the word "waste" when you wrote "waist." Secondly, it's a poor criticism to say "oh yeah, you do better" when my point is simply this: the fact that good promos are difficult to write is no excuse for writing bad promos. People who are employed to write good promos should, logically, be able to write good promos.

It's not poor criticism when you can't deal with the fact you just sit back and judge with no solutions. Offer solutions to your criticism. I am still waiting to hear solutions. What candle do you hold their work to? You judge by a couple promos when I am in fact sure like any other talk station in the country they have hundreds in rotation. That would be the same as saying their morning man Jim Turner is a terrible morning host because of a couple bad interviews here and there. Bob Hazen and Mike Synan are terrible morning reporters because of a couple bad stories here and there. And in fact if you do know anything about radio, how thin it is, how nationalized it has become, how dj's, production, and anything else you can name all comes down the pipes from the corporate machines, I am sure there is one person doing a thousand different duties and this is one of them. With the fact that talk stations like WDBO and WSB are two of the top talk stations in the southeast, I will side with the professionals any day still over a monday morning quarterback like you!

So, let me get this straight, oldschoolradio...

If a QB in a football game completes 20% of his passes and throws 3 interceptions in a game, are you saying that I'm only allowed to criticize his performance if I can personally do a better job myself?

That's simply ludicrous.

radiolite doesn't want to be a promo writer. What he wants is either A.) for the existing promo-writers to do a better job, or B.) for the existing promo-writers to be replaced with promo-writers who will do a better job. What's so wrong with that?
