WDBY off the air?

I am wondering if anyone else closer to the patterson area can confirm this. I get pure static on 105.5 in the Poughkeepsie area. I see a construction permit for a new 1200 watt booster in Danbury. http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/info?call=WDBY-1&service=FB

Isn't that quite abit of power for a booster? Could they be moving their stick out of patterson instead? Bad move IMO. They would do much better with a stronger signal in Poughkeepsie.

They are back on... wonder what happened.

The Danbury Connection

Rumors from the Danbury market indicate that the new tower is part of the ongoing Cumulus assault on the Berkshire Radio dominated market in Danbury. When WREF (850 AM - The True Oldies Channel) boosted its coverage into Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess, it strengthened the 98Q - WLAD (800 AM) dominance in Danbury. One of the weaknesses of 98Q and WLAD is that it starts to disappear as you pass Hardscrabble Road on I-684 South.

By first boosting the Y105 signal in Danbury, Cumulus overlays (and extends beyond) the 98Q coverage area. You can also expect Cumulus to strengthen the output from this new tower for WPUT - WINE, attacking the Berkshire AM products.

The Berkshire products are helpless because it's transmitter cannot get clearance for additional height. The signal is strong but the tower is not high enough to make a difference. By attacking 98Q-WLAD-WREF, Cumulus hopes to clear a path for WRKI-FM (I-95) to permanently take the #1 position away from 98Q.

The reason that Y-105 will never have a stronger signal in PoTown is that it would take away listeners from WRRV-WPDH-Mix97 ... and most of Mix97's format has already been "plagerized" from 98Q (i.e., the Super 80's weekends).

From My Email

Sorry for a double post, folks ... this was in my email from a reliable source.

" ... missing the obvious. If Y105 abandons the tower in Patterson, the tower could be licensed to broadcast the Cumulus products from Poughkeepsie into the Danbury market. It's Bob Miller versus Mister Morning. WPDH already has some coverage there but you wouldn't want WPDH and I-95 running side by side. However, WRRV and Mix97 would definitely have an impact on the Danbury Arbitrons and it gives Benfer a way to succeed without having to win the Poughkeepsie market. This is a fertile ground for Benfer because Berkshire Broadcasting does not have a good response to the onslaught of Cumulus stations into the Danbury market."

This doesn't make sense. According to radio-locator, the new WDBY tower doesn't even come close to matching WDAQs coverage.

new WDBY: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WDBY-1&service=FB&status=C&hours=U

WDAQ: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WDAQ&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

Maps are Maps

Please be assured that the 98Q coverage is GREATLY exaggerated. Anything beyond the local coverage line is a dream ... based on power, the coverage for 98Q should be better. Again, the height of the tower is the problem.

Y105's coverage, thanks to a new antenna, will blow WDAQ away. It is already possible to get Y105 in Golden's Bridge without the new tower, but 98.3 gets a station from Long Island at the same location.
