WDBZ Buzzes Back To Talk

John Kiesewetter is reporting that gospel station WDBZ/1230, the former urban-oriented talk station, is now the former gospel station after reverting to the format they started with ten years ago, up until 2008:

According to the schedule posted, they're still going to run gospel music overnights. In an interesting twist, they're going to simulcast Tom Joyner with sister station WMOJ/100.3.
 
It was, which it is why it was dumb for Radio One to switch to Gospel in the first place. I could never understand why they went with a music format on that tiny AM signal. They probably thought they could save a buck.

Considering it was Radio One, 'nuff said. Their motto is "take a successful radio station and screw it up as bad as possible". Louisville went from the top billing Blue Chip market to not even in the top third of Radio One stations once they got their hands on them.
 
My feeling is the station should go with local programs and hosts if they want to get and keep listeners. I don't think just picking up feeds from other places will do it. There are enough local topics that could draw interest and result in phone calls coming in.
 
To an interested outsider, How expensive is expensive? What would it cost per hour to do a local call in show?

Depends on the caliber of host and whether they have a call screener...I'd guess anywhere from $10/hr up to $30/hr. If their commercials go for $10/each (that could be way off base), they'd have to sell at least 3 spots every single hour to assure they'd break even.

What if you through in the cost of a call screener? Then how much are we looking at? Here in Columbus, occasional callers to the WTVN local talk shows ask for more locally produced talk shows
but C.C. seems very reluctant to add more locally produced programming. You have a lot more
local talk shows there in Cincinnati.
 
ALL commercial $$$ for a local show goes to the station, whereas with syndicated, it does not. Assuming equal numbers of commercials, it seems local would be preferred.

Please enlighten the uninitiated...

Radio One's gospel station in Atlanta is a usually their highest rated station. Praise is really remarkable considering the small signal. Just like corporate radio everywhere: if it works in one market it will work everywhere.
