WDCX: 2 inquires:

WDCX/99.5 has a sign on River Road.
1. I missed what is the intention of the billboard advertisement?
May some one explain it.

2. Does, this forum, in their humble opinion, believe/think 99.5
will ever feature Christin Musicians/artists, with
a chr/top40 presentation?? I heard Life 100.dot.three,
and it reeeely sizzzled!!

I think 99.5 should make an intense, music based
format, with top notch production, and sincere
efforts to capture the youth/young adult audience.

PS:
(side note) if a stand alone, station in the rochester-
buffalo market, is sold,(say 96.5 from dunkirk-fredonia)
is sold again, or....say 1440 WJJL is dumped to
a local investor, any chance of a Christin Music
format to sign on ?

I'm not an expert in this genre, but 'DCX has programmed a niche known as "Christian teaching and talk" for most of its history. Nationwide, Salem also has many of these stations, such as KKLA FM in Los Angeles. I'm guessin' that these stations are big money-makers even with very low ratings, since the individual program producers have to buy the big chunks of 30 or 60 minutes of airtime.

If one of these stations were to shift to Christian pop music, they'd likely be in more of a ratings battle with the other commercial FM's in the market. My hunch is that it would be a real leap of faith (pun intended) for Crawford to dump the current 'DCX format for music.

In some of its markets, including LA, Salem has Christian teaching and talk on one FM, and Christian pop music on another.

I just took a quick look at the 'DCX website and noticed that they're programming Christian music on their HD-2 channel - FWIW.

Incidentally, WDCX was one of Buffalo's early FM's not affiliated with an AM station. It may have pre-dated WADV, although I could be wrong. Does anyone know if the station ever had another format? I know it was already Christian when I first heard it in '63 or '64.

Radio evangelist Percy Crawford, who was based in the Philadelphia area, was an early believer in FM broadcasting. He applied for several construction permits in the late '50s when it was possible to get a large-market FM license simply by filling out a form and enclosing two Wheaties boxtops in an envelope addressed to the FCC. After Percy passed on in 1960, his five children took over as owner/operators of the stations that had been granted. AFAIK, WDCX has always been owned by a family member and never carried a different format.

Don Crawford (who runs the Crawford Broadcasting group) still has WDCX, WPWX (formerly WYCA) near Chicago and some others, but Dean and Dick inherited WDAC in Lancaster, PA. I think Dan bought out Dean's 1/3 interest in WDAC, but I'm not sure which stations Donna owned.

There are a few WDCX billboards up, all promoting the Dave Ramsey show on WDCX. If WDCX makes any format changes, they would probably be in the direction of more talk shows like Ramsey and Neil Boron. I don't see them going for a music format. What they are doing is working for them, in large part because the cover a good swath of Ontario, where it is difficult to put a Christian talk/teaching station on the air.

Interestingly, there have been two other NY Crawford stations that flipped from talk/teaching to music. WRCI in Rochester did so, then flipped to the oldies "Legends" format nine months later. WPTR in Albany also did so, and so far the format has worked there.

As for more Christian music in Buffalo, I don't see it happening locally. Most of the successful stations in the format are in the Bible-belt of the country. K-love, though, might pick up a station or two in the area. I wouldn't put it past them; in the past several years they've gone from no presence in NY to covering Albany, Utica, Syracuse, and Rochester. A Buffalo station would be the natural progression.

Mistaken Identity

I saw the billboard at the end of 198 at the 190 ramp. As I drove past, I thought that the logo said WDCX Lite FM. To me, it looked like they were promoting Dave Ramsey as a music host.

I went to the website, and that's when I saw that their logo actually says WDCX Life FM. Dave Ramsey does a financial advice call-in show, and is new to the station. I'm guessing that he's the one that paid for the billboards. He self-syndicates his show, which is carried on multiple stations. He also does a TV show on Fox Business Network.
