WDEL Changes?

Word on the street is Carl Kanefski is on the way out. Does anybody know if it's his choice or theirs? Rumor has it the P.D.'s not a fan. Will this hurt the station? He covers a lot of stories and the Gen. Assembly.
 
I've been hearing Carl a lot more on WDEL lately, but that certainly doesn't mean anything. Do you think the financial situation is starting to pinch, due to live and local talk, and they are going to cut back on staff, meaning reporters. Kanefski has been around Delaware radio and TV (channel 12) for quite awhile, has made many connections with politicians and local news makers, etc. He's a good reporter, sounds good on air, so what's not to like.

Of course maybe Carl is moving on to KYW, WTOP, or some other major market station.
 
The news staff of WDEL is constantly fluid. 5 years seems to be the average, except for morning drive anchors. Although higher than WILM, the pay at WDEL is not the best in the world. At some point you need to move on.
 
I've heard that Carl has a good reputation in Dover covering state government. Why would they want to lose him?

Maybe it's my immagination but it sounds like there are MORE people working on WDEL of late. Perhaps that's in response to WILM's continued implosion as a local radio station?
 
Let me put a new "word on the street."

"Word on the street is the WDEL PD is really impressed with the depth, quality and quantity of Carl Kanefsky's reporting."

I got that from the WDEL PD himself, who says he's really lucky he works with such an awesome staff of pros.
They make him look like he almost knows what he's doing!

Long time reader...First time poster.

Jensen's comments sound like the explanation of a kid who got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. I think if he goes, it would be his decision (unless anyone knows of another issue besides the lack of managerial support. I know he thinks a lot of the News Director, holds him in very high regard, and don't think he's had any problems working with him.
 
As a long time WDEL listener (think 50 years!) I have noticed a pattern. There are those, like at other stations, who use it as a stepping stone to a bigger market. There are those who like the nitch they are in and stay forever. Then there are those who enjoy their time in radio, do a lot of networking, then move on to a public post. That later group become media spokespersons for mayors, governors, attorneys general, etc. That has been done by many WDEL news reporters over the years.

Carl has certainly made a lot of contacts over the years and his work is excellent. So I would not think it unreasonable for him to put his considerable talent and numerous contacts to work to better himself at some point. Its called "growing."
