WDEL coverage of the Division 2 state championship

Congratulations to WDEL for their coverage of the Divsion 2 Football Championship. Thanks for put it on WDEL.COM, I listened to the game while watching the Seaford Christmas parade, the audio was excellent.
 
So you listened via WIFI on a I-phone or Blackberry? This definitely is the future for radio both AM and FM. Reception no longer becomes an issue. You could have been in anywhere in the US or overseas where you could get some sort of WIFI connection and heard WDEL just as clearly.

Can 1150 be picked up very well in Seaford? I'd assume no.

Mike: It's been a long time since I've been to Seaford, but I think you can hear us there - but it's not necessarily "listenable." Lots of static, but you can tell that we're there. We're much stronger in Eastern Sussex, along the coast.
 
WDEL does come in quite well in Milford & Rehoboth. Not sure if it fades by time you get to Fenwick Island or not. Haven't been that far down in a while. Actually Chris, I'm surprised that Delmarva hasn't simulcast WDEL on some AM in Sussex County. Of course, I guess WGMD hopes you'd never do that as that move would step on their toes.
 
Since Sussex County isn't in our Arbitron metro, I'm not sure what we would have to gain, both in terms of listenership and advertising dollars.
 
That's a good point Chris.

Even though WDEL's signal gets downstate quite well, it still is an upstate station that targets mainly the Wilmington metro area, so why would a Dover or Milford business buy time on WDEL as the bulk of WDEL's listeners are in the Wilmington area. It's like a Philly or Baltimore station that has a strong signal into Delaware running spots from anywhere in Delaware. We aren't their target audience either and the bulk of their listeners are in either Philly or Baltimore.

It does seem weird, when I've listened to Elliot's show on WILM/WDOV and every now and then you'll hear a Dover or Milford oriented business spot (not a statewide business like Wallgreens or Concord Pet). I've got no interest in those local stores from down there and surly aren't going to drive to Dover or Milford to buy their products. It must be the same way for those folks in Milford or Dover hearing all the spots for Wilmington area businesses.

You could assume that many times the downstate spots appearing on WILM are the result of packaged Clear Channel multi-station buys. CC often adds in the lesser-rated stations into deals for WDSD.
 
I would argue in favor of WDEL being carried on one of the downstate AMers owned by DBC. The reason? WILM/WDOV/WDSD-HD2. The AMs are now basically a combo every weekday. During the afternoon, during Rush, you will hear downstate PSA's for church events, etc. I don't know if there is any money involved, of course.

But since WDEL's main competitor is statewide, I wish WDEL could be also.

Actually I listened on 3g through my Verizon Palm Pre-Plus and the tune in radio app. During the day WDEL does make it into eastern Sussex County, and I actually heard it listenable on Rt. 13 one night a year ago or so in Salisbury, but with WRVA on 1140, the further south you go the more spotty WDEL. One thing that may have help over 10 years ago or so, is a Washington area station moved from 1150 to 1160 a couple of years ago. I wish WDEL would consider putting their signal on WAFL's HD, they already have an HD 2 and HD 3, but technology allows for an HD4 since as WOGL in Philly uses.
