WDEL using ESPN World Series Broadcast rather than Phillies

I noticed that tonight, WDEL didn't air the Phillies radio network broadcast of game #1 of the World Series as WPHT did, but instead used the ESPN radio network feed. I guess Chris Carl of WDEL, who seems to read these posts could enlighten us as to why. The ESPN radio coverage was good, no problem in my opinion.

My guess is, the Phillies radio network was charging far more than ESPN radio so WDEL decided to air the ESPN network feed instead.

On the contrary. Outside of the two home market stations of the respective teams in the World Series (in this year's case, WPHT and WHNZ), all affiliates on their respective networks are forced to take the ESPN Radio call, since they hold the exclusive radio rights to the World Series.

DToTheJ,

You are correct, sir. Mike's headline should read "WDEL FORCED to carry ESPN World Series Broadcast rather than the Phillies."

We reviewed our contract with the Phillies Radio Network as soon as Carlos Ruiz (or, as Tim McCarver pronounces it, RUE-iz) caught the final out, and it provides affiliate stations with access the national broadcasts, with only flagship stations being permitted to carry the local broadcast.

It seems RIDICULOUS to me that we've carried more than 170 Phillies baseball games from March to October, and our listeners won't be able to hear Harry Kalas say, "And the Phillies are World Series champions!!!"

As an aside, anyone who subscribes to SiriusXM could hear Kalas and Co. with the call on WPHT, as well as the Rays' home station's play-by-play - if one is so inclined - via WHNZ.
