WDEL/WSTW's Charlie Slezak

From Mr. Fybush and the Northeast Radio Watch:

And just across the border in DELAWARE we're very sorry to have to report the sudden death of Charlie Slezak, veteran engineer at Delmarva Broadcasting (WDEL/WSTW). Charlie suffered a heart attack Sunday (Oct. 1), at age 53, leaving behind wife Nancy Black and four children. He'd been at WDEL/WSTW for 25 years, and was our tour guide when we visited the stations in 2003 for Tower Site of the Week. (The cover of the 2005 Tower Site Calendar was shot on that trip.) We'd long been meaning to take Charlie up on his invitation to visit Delmarva's stations down on the shore some warm summer weekend, and we're sorry that won't happen, now.

My comment: I never had the chance to meet Charlie, but I have heard nothing but good things about him. My sympathies and prayers go out to Charlie's family, friends, peers and co-workers.

First got to know him when he did part time work at both WDEL and WNRK using the name Chris Stevens. Had the chance to work with him on Saturdays at WDEL. Nice guy who, like me, loved the old Buick Sky Hawk cars.

Question, Was Charlie a full time engineer there, or did he work part time. Also, did he do any air work and what was his air name. I am trying to recall if I can place him.

Thanks,

If you happen to read the part of my post that you quote, you'll notice that you quoted my saying his air name was Chris Stevens.

I worked with Charlie in the mid 80's at WDEL/WSTW. Great guy. I kept in contact over the years. When Julian (Pete) Booker came back in the late 90's or so as General Manager (Now President of Delmarva) he hired Charlie was chief engineer for the retiring engineer. Charlie did air work on WDEL, WSTW and WNRK as Charlie Stevens. I had the chance to see Charlie from time to time at the Delaware Emergency Communications Committe meeting, but unfortunately he missed the last one in May. He also was very involved in Ham radio, and I believe did work on the Harve De Grace, Md repeater (146.85) as will as the two Wilmington repeaters (146.73 & 146.955). Charlie will definely be missed.
