WDEX AM - Monroe - 1982

I asked this on the North Carolina board last week with no response. I may have asked here a year or two ago, again with no response. But I know there are many new users now so we'll give it another shot:

Does anyone have any info on where some of the jocks from the Top 40 WDEX of the very early 80's are? Anyone have airchecks?

Also, can someone outline the history of the station from sign on to preset day? Feel free to reply on or off line...anonymity guaranteed.

Hey...
I have a few. I sent you an e-mail. If anybody else has any, I too would like to hear from you.

Got it! Thanks...

Would love to hear from more users who know/remember WDEX circa 1982-1983. If you are a lurker, and not registered, just visit my website for contact info. Thanks!

I do not have any airchecks but do have the weather bed on cart that was used on WDEX in Monroe on North Main Street when Del Broadcasting owned it and Bob Chrysler's wife Ann Cruise programmed it, Becky Tucker was the Promostions Director and Van was on the air, I would love to hear those airchecks!
I'll get the wx bed transfered this weekend and post.

I remember it signing on. I lived nearby.

It was what we might call hot adult contemporary today, although what it sounded like was more like mainstream adult contemporary now. In other words, all the formats were softer.

They would say, "The energy of tomorrow" followed by some annoying noise, and "today" or something like that.

Here's the weather bed, be it noted that it was also used later at Z-100 from the Kannapolis studios for a couple of years.

That's cool! Thanks!

On your page you say that the station signed on in 1983. I am quite certain it was 1982. I was listening to the station for several months before we moved from the area. We moved away in March 1983. Also, I remember hearing "For Your Eyes Only" from Sheena Easton at about 10pm for many nights in row. It seemed to still be a popular song at the time as the James Bond movie by the same name had been released in 1981. I also won from the station Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out album which was a 1982 release.

Correct me if I am wrong...

Actually it was January 1982. I had posted a link to the FCC Database, and thatwasradio replied to me. Those two posts have disappeared. Apparently casualties of an SQL database change...

I'll find it later and post it again...

Glad you posted, Charlie, I was wondering if I just imaginied that I had replied...
Anyway, I got my info from the Broadcasting & Cable Yearbook from 1984 and assumed it was correct, as my memory is not what it used to be!
I have since corrected it on my site, if anyone has anything to add about WDEX on thatwasradio.com, just let me know, ANYTHING, jocks, music, programming, etc.

Never rely on Broadcasting and Cable Yearbook.

I have the actual Enquirer-Journal article at home somewhere. January may just be when they were authorized.

I was actually on the front page of the paper in either 81 or 82. I'll get it out of my "stuff" and get the date...maybe you have that one too!

Probably not. I have too much stuff. And I'm not really interested in digging through all those articles anytime soon.
