I live here in Atlanta area. When,I use to visit relatives in Daytona Beach area: I would listen to a great rock station called WDIZ. WDIZ was merged with WJRR sometime in 1990s. Where can I find on the internert/world wide web, any memories/memorbilla of DIZ?

Hey I know the station you are talking about.
I live in NJ, and when I would visit the Daytona Beach area I listened to that station as well. From what I remember, Rock 100 was owned by Shamrock Broadcasting. I would also like more info, airchex, etc. If anyone has anything post it.

I believe the original WDIZ became a rock station in 1985. It might have been 1986. I'm not completely sure. But then in the mid 1990s, 1996 I think (again, my memory is fuzzy), it became an AC station. Now they're Spanish Tropical.

WDIZ Orlando 100.3 was 'doing thier thing' back in 1982; Album-Oriented-Rock; "AOR". I was assigned to Naval Training Center and have a few short clips on cassette somewhere.

Rocky W.

1982? I thought it was a little later than that.

I must be losing my memory!

I was in Orlando briefly in early 1980, and I remember hearing WDIZ, at that time, along with 107.7-WORJ,
which I believe had been the heritage rock station in that area...

How can I forget about that website? Thanks for the reminder Bob! According to the CFL Radio website, WDIZ became rock in 1986. I guess during those times I really didn't listen to WDIZ.

I not trying to question the history of Central Florida Radio. I just remember listening to WDIZ as a rock station from late 1970s up to mid 1990s. The last time I visit Daytona Beach was in 2001 & WDIZ had been merged with Real Rock 101 in late 1990s,I think.
Or maybe my memory of 40 year person is starting to fade.

You are correct. Thanks to the telcom act, WDIZ was bought out by paxon at the time and simulcasted WJRR for a little while. Then 100.3 switched gears completly to become WSHE. It's a shame we don't have a mainstream rock station like the old WDIZ anymore. The nearest station similar is WSJZ out of Sebastion.

A thought WSHE was a rock station in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. I never got a chance to listen to the station because I didnot visit that part of Florida. It is my understanding that WSHE in South FLA was sold off.

WDIZ, Rock 100.3 was a truly great AOR (album oriented rock) station. They, along with 95 WYNF in Tampa are two legendary great rockers . Remember Baxter and Mark, Slatz, Scotty Phillips, Rad Messick, Greg Morgan, all the others? I have an original WDIZ XL t-shirt, never worn and 2-3 license plates and bumper stickers. What's your asking price, I'll ship for free to US only. Otherwise it all goes on eBay . Another great rocker that had a huge stick was 99 WIZD (now Gater 98.7 in Ft. Pierce). And of course further down south you had the legendary 103.5 WSHE and K-102 in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Ah, those were the days....

Yes, WSHE was a station in Fort Lauderdale. Towards the end if I recall, it was more of a classic-based AAA station rather than an AOR. That station, like WJRR and WDIZ merged with (then) classic rock WZTA to become active rock 94-9 Zeta. I think WDIZ/WJRR merged in 1996. Mind you, JRR was only about a year or so old. I think WSHE merged in 1995 with WZTA. So, in order to "park" the call sign somewhere, WDIZ calls went to the AM for a little while, and the WSHE calls came to Orlando.

Again, my memory is a bit fuzzy here, but I think WJRR was more of an alternative/modern rocker, WHTQ (which was Q-96 at the time, I think) was pretty much classic rock, so WDIZ really was the monkey in the middle.

Also, with the WDIZ stuff for sale, if you'd like, shoot me an e-mail at radiodxrichmond -at- yahoo.com. or IM me. I'm an interested radio memorabilia geek buyer.

I remember listening to WDIZ when Mike Lyons and Carren Sheldon did mornings - The Rude Awakening; some chick did middays - kathy taylor??? i loved the electric lunch - and their program director Mick Dolan did afternoons.

It was early 1980s, perhaps even 1980, or 1979, i was at UCF.....or evans high...it's all a blur......i do remember winning a bus ride to see ZZ top in jacksonville, a great show, that was 1981. The night jock - Jim Steele?? - rode up with us.......

great radio station. Baxter and mark came on later with Carol Dedman doing news. I was fortunate enough to work for Carol at Real Radio back in the late 1990s.......

I remember DIZ exactly as MusicMan11 just described it.
I was probably eleven years old. We lived in Orlando while my parents were involved in the construction of EPCOT, and left for Atlanta about six months after it opened. I wish I still had my DIZ T-shirt, and Vans shoes with the logo printed all around the edges but they wouldn't fit today anyway. One of my fondest memories was of the "DIZ Pig-Out". It was a series of local bands in concert (at the fairgrounds?) with tons of barbecue, and the first wet t-shirt contest I ever saw. I got a souvenir painter's hat with a picture of a bunch of parachuting pigs printed on the top, and "DIZ Pig-Out" printed across the front.

It is almost criminal to watch Clueless Channel send great rock stations like WDIZ, WSHE & 96Rock ( here in my hometown of Atlanta )to the graveyard. Can I blame Clueless Channel for sending WYNF to its grave?

On a trip through Orlando in 1980, I remember listening to both Rock 100-WDIZ and the other Rock station, at the time, 107.7-WORJ. I believe that WORJ was around through much of the 1970s, while WDIZ was a relative new comer at the time...

Just to clarify some things from the mid-90's...
Rock 100 WDIZ was lost formaticly and stuck between classics on 96.5 WHTQ and the newcomer on the block, alternative 101.1 WJRR. Although WJRR was doing quite well as "the cutting edge of rock", ultimately, Paxson was simply going to buy the competition and eliminate any threat WDIZ might muster in the future. That's fine and good for business.... but here's where Paxson and eventually Clear Channel screwed up. Instead of simply eliminating the product which was "WDIZ", they instead canned the successful jocks at WJRR, kept the jocks from WDIZ, and re-positioned WJRR as "The Rock Station". I remember the morning well... following Ron&Ron at 10AM, on pops Pat Lynch saying "hey, we're still here" and fires off some Led Zepplin. A shock to the many in central Florida who had been listening to JRR because they hated the crap on DIZ. So let me get this straight.... instead of simply starting over with 100.3 (which they ended up doing weeks later with She 100), they actually blew up their own successful rock station at 101.1 and placed the failing product there, bought from 100.3. To this day that has got to be one of the dumbest moves in central Florida radio history (the other being dumping "Cool" for jammin oldies "Power"). As a result, JRR fell in the ratings basement and only recovered when challenged by the lame attempt by O-Rock 105.9. Of course in defense, some of the DIZ guys that made the switch that day.... are still there today. Go figure.

Bottom line is this.... corporate consulting, consolidation, and mis-mangement in the 90's led radio and legendary stations like WDIZ, WSHE, and WYNF to early graves.

I did morning drive news with Mike Lyons for a while in the late 70's and early 80's. We had a bet on the Buccaneers winning a playoff game with Philly one year. The loser had to run around along I-4 with no shirt on and one of those big #1 gloves. The Bucs won and Mike lost. I was a hoot, doing "news" reports from the streets. Great radio station. (btw my real name is Vincent Ray).
