WDJA 1420 CHANGING FORMATS?

Hey Guys:

I see that Power TALK 1420 is going away as of the new year. Anybody know about this?

I heard it on Dick Farrel's show today. He said he is shopping around for a new station for himself and Imus. He was going to visit them today after his show. Could it be 1040??

He claims on December 30th, it turns to Radio Cristo/Spanish Gospel. He jokes, "there's a real big market for that." He's right...lol. Already been tried and failed back in 2003/04 on WEXY 1520 as "Un Radio Cristiana." But what is left for WDJA? They did the brokered reggae/haiti thing with Jammin' 1420 (which 1580 and 1400 both tired and failed.) Did FOX Sports. Did English Language Power Talk. I was wondering what format could be left for 1420 but considering Farrell and Imus were getting dumped, it had to be some hybrid of foreign language brokering. But I have to say, wasn't expecting Spanish Gospel. Curve ball.

A fellow with whom I had worked in the 1980's said that when he was at the station in the golf course, the joke was that their then call letters meant, "Weird, Dumb, Boring, and Foolish". WDBF had an MOR music format.

WDBF was always in the Miami phone books as well, IIRC, along with WHOO Orlando (when it was the 990 there)---for reasons I'll never comprehend, especially when Miami had its own 990, WFAB.

I could never ever hear WDBF/WDJA at night here, but I did hear them at night from Belleview, just south of Ocala. WRBL/WRCG Columbus GA used to dominate 1420 at night here (now, not so much).

Whrrrrrrr.....
That's the sound of Mr. Knight spinning in his grave. (Vic, IIRC?) WDBF's MOR format wasn't my cup of meat, and the equipment wasn't going to win any SBE awards (unless time travel became possible), but think about Delray in the 80s, if you can stand it. Median age: deceased. The format fit the COL. And if you're going to take a prospective ad client out for a round of golf, making your office the 19th hole sure makes signing a contract easier.

As for the aforementioned Knight, I have no idea what he was like to work for, but he was very nice to me when I desperately needed a place to edit and duplicate audition tapes, and in the bargain I cut a couple spots for him. And my apologies if I've prematurely buried him; he must be spinning in a golf cart.

Correction:

It's now Radio Universo 1420.

Thanks for posting this Jay. Geeze ~ I'll click it on for curosity sake, but I'm sure it's just a simulcast. Someone bought up all the airtime. I doubt that programming is produced in house. So within one month, we've had three English language AM's (WLVJ 1040, 1420 WDBF and 1400 WFLL) all go foreign. Two Spanish, on Brazilian. And no rock stations. Yeah, I know Big...but they seem more into Ron & Paul "fugitabowedit" yak fests and football games than rock. This market is just sad....no one tries, no one bothers to serve the public interest. The public does include "english" speaking people, the last time I checked.
